Ranallo Mauro welcomes us to tonight's show - WITHOUT HIS TRADEMARK HAIR OR GOATEE! Wow, this was unexpected, Mauro has his hair slicked back but still rockin' the horn-rimmed glasses. Frank Shamrock and Pat Millitich are brought in to give a run-down of tnight's main event, KJ Noons vs. Nick Diaz for the Strikeforce Welterweight Title. Another Welterweight title is on the line tonight, Women's Welterweight champion Sarah Kaufman is set to defend against Marloes Coens. We then run down the rest of the main event card and right into our first fight.

Tyron "T-Wood" Woodley (8-0-0, 170.5 lbs) vs. Andre Galvao (5-1-0, 170.5 lbs)

Woodley is stepping up from the Strikeforce: Challengers series tonight, while Galvao has made a few Strikeforce undercard appearances. Galvao looks to take down Woodley early, gets stuffed and gets rocked as Woodley puts him in a headlock and fires away with punches right to the face, pushing his head down. Galvao is wobbly, but still swinging, overcommitting on it all and missing, Woodley wisely backs up and is keeping his distance. Galvao shoots again, getst stuffed again, punches to the face, Galvao is again wobbly, but tries to shoot one more time, gets stuffed once more, Galvao gets pounded in the face and the referee stops this one, Galvao just isn't there!

OFFICIAL RESULT: Tyron Woodley d. Andre Galvao @ 1:45 of Round 1 by TKO (Strikes).

Strikeforce Women’s Welterweight Championship
champion Sarah Kaufman (12-0-0, 134.25 lbs) vs. Marloes "Rumina" Coenen (17-4-0, 134 lbs)

Coenen is coming off a loss to Christiane "Cyborg" Santos at Strikeforce: Miami in January for Strikeforce's Women's Light Heavyweight (145 lb) title, and has cut weight to come down to the 135 lb. Welterweight division to take on Kaufman, who successfully defended this title in July against Roxanne Modafferi at Strikeforce: Challengers 9. Coenen comes in slightly older, slightly taller, slightly lighter and with a slight reach advantage, but she has to upset an undefeated champion.Dan Stell is the referee in charge, and pictured in the stand is Meisha Tate, who will face the winner of this fight by virtue of her winning the one-night Welterweight tournament at Strikeforce: Phoenix a few months ago.

Round One sees both women mixing the action up early, keeping close and staying in the middle of the ring. Coenen opens up with a few low leg kicks, Kaufman eats them and shows no pain yet. Nothing big yet, just feeling each other out, they're moving in, throwing a few strike combos and moving right out, 3:00 left. Coenen finally moves in and throws strikes, clinches, pushes Kaufman into the corner, Kaufman defends and turns it around on the fence. Coenen throws a solid elbow on the cage, Kaufman spins her around again and theys tart trading knees, referee breaks it up with 2:12 left. Coenen opens up with a big right, a left hook follows, Kaufman looks a little rocked, COenen again witha  body lock and clinches, puts Kaufman in the corner, Kaufman reverses position and works on knees to the body, Coenen with a head clinch, they jockey for position across the ring to the other side of the cage, staying locked into each other and throwing knees, 1:00 left. Kaufman is trying to find a way to throw Coenen to the ground, referee again seperates them with 40 seconds left. Coenen throws a left leg kick, left punch, right leg kick, another right leg kick, overhand right   just misses, Kaufman counter-striking well. 10 seconds left, both ladies connecting with leather, Kaufman goes for a clinch and pushes Coenen onto the cage as the horn sounds. I can give this one 10-9 to Coenen, she controlled most of the action here sofar, and the Strikeforce broadcast team agrees with me, slight edge to Coenen.

Round Two begins, both women testing each other early again, Coenen clinches and looks to throw knees, Kaufman tries to throw her to the ground, can't do it but succeeds in getting her into the cage and tries to throw again, then grinds her body into Coenen's body and is throwing inside knees. Coenen is throwing them back, but the women get warned to start working more. 3:30 left, both women now throwing knees, crowd is booing the action sofar and referee breaks it up at 3:10 to take it back to the middle of the ring. Kaufman is now keeping Coenen at bay. Coenen finally opens up with a body kick at 2:15, lands it solid but Kaufman catches it and drives Coenen into the cage, body lock, and is nailing her with inside knees to the legs and to the body. Coenen is trying to power her way out of it, but Kaufman is keeping her on the fence, hits her with a left elbow to the face, Coenen throws a high knee, gets blocked, 1:30 left, Kaufman responding with more knees as both women are now clinching and grappling, throwing knees and keeping it working... and the referee breaks it up once more! AUGH! 59 seconds left, Kaufman now opening up with strikes and keeping Coenen backing up. COenen throws a head kick, easily blocked, throws a left, blocked, throws another right kick, it's caught, Kaufman goes for a takedown, Coenen tries to turn it into a hip toss, Kaufman blocks it and lands on top inside Coenen's guard and starts swinging away! Coenen tries to slip in an arm triangle from the bottom, but Kaufman pulls right out as the round ends! I'm giving that one 10-9 to Kaufman.

Round Three, Coenen trying to strike, Kaufman is able to sweep and get a takedown at 4:20 left, COenen tries to reverse, Kaufman re-takes dominant position and is now trying to throw strikes inside full guard, Coenen is working hard from the bottom, Kaufman is able to scoot Coenen's head into the cage to limit her movement. 3:30 left, Kaufmanpostures up, throwing body shots, Coenen is throwing punches from the bottom but Kaufman opening up with hammerfists, fans getting into it now, Coenen has an arm triangle locks it in, Kaufman stands up to try to pull out of it, Coenen pops her hips and Kaufman taps out!

OFFICIAL RESULT: Marloes COenen d. Sarah Kaufman @ 1:59 of Round 3 by Submission (Arm Triangle).  Coenen first apologizes to Kaufman about possibly injuring her arm, she said the referee was late in stopping the fight. Kaufman did appear to be quite upset with the referee about it, but the ladies talked about it immediately afterwards and agreed this was the ref's fault.

Josh "the Punk" Thomson (17-3-0, 155.25 lbs) vs. Gesias "JZ" Cavalcante (15-3-1, 155.75 lbs)

Cavalcante is making his Strikeforce debut, well-known in K-1 and DREAM, and is coming off of a split-decision win over Katsunori Kikuno at DREAM 15 in July. Thomson, a long-time Strikeforce competitor and the former Strikeforce Light Heavyweight champion, is coming in off of a submission win over Pat Healey in June at Strikeforce/M-1 Global: Fedor vs. Werdum. "Big" John McCarthy is the referee in charge.

Both men are mixing up the strike and kick attempts in this opening minute, Cavalcante throws a strong right leg kick and then puts Thomson on the cage, grinding into him witha  body lock and throwing knees. 3:30 left, Cavalcante breaks it off and Thomson tries to connect with a kick to the head, blocked. Cavalcante is lookign to load up his left hand and follows it up with kicks, everything is big and heavy sofar. 2:40 left, Thomson throws a kick, blocked, Cavalcante counters with a left, Thomson ducks it, tries to follow it up with a takedown, Cavalcante easily locks in a guillotine choke, falls to his back, looks like he's got it in deep, he's got four victories with this move, full body triangle with the legs here, 2:00 left, Thomson is being patient, driving his shoulder into Cavalcante's neck, throws body punches, and Cavalcante lets it go, 90 seconds left. Thomson is inside Cavalcante's full guard and is throwing body punches, now cross face punches, a few hammer punches, back to the body again, 60 seconds left. Cavalcante is trying to keep his guard closed , trying to throw his legs up into rubber guard, Thompson postures up, pulls out of it, Cavalcante has ahold of the wrist, Thomson looking to pull him straight up off of the mat, dives in and has an arm triangle on Cavalcante while trying to pass full mount, 10 seconds, Thomson passes the guard, is fully extended, HORN SOUNDS!  I'm giving this one 10-9 to Thomson, Cavalcante saved by the horn!

Round Two: Cavalcante takes his time before rushing Thomson onto the cage and going for a body lock, Thomson body locks as well and both men grind into each other on the cage for the first minute. They start trying to trade inside knees, Thomson has Cavalcante on the cage, they continue to wrestle and trade posotion on the cage, Cavalcante trying to go for a sweep with 3:00 left, Thomson stops it and has Cavalcante in the corner. Thomson continuing to throw knees to the inside of Cavalcante's thighs and body. A reversal by Cavalcante and hits Thomson with a knee to the body, 2:30 left. Thomson throws Cavalcante to the ground, lands on his back, Cavalcante still holding onto his knees. Thomson is able to pull out, takes Cavalcante's back, trying to flatten him out, 2:00 left. Cavalcante is on his side, Thomson has one leg hooked in, and looks to be working for a side choke again. Thomson isn't rushing or panicking here. 90 seconds, Cavalcante rolls to his knees, gets a foot onto the mat to try to escape, Thomson still has his left leg hooked in, has the arms around the body and is just squeezing him, occasionally throwing a punch, 60 seconds left. Thomson looks for an arm triangle, Cavalcante rolls onto his back to escape it, but gives Thomson the half guard with Thomson on top. Thomson throws a big punch to the face, has an underhook on Cavalcante, trying for an arm triangle gain, has Cavalcante on the mat unable to move. 10 seconds left, Thomson postures up and starts trying to throw bombs on Cavalcante, Cavalcante trying to escape but can't find one before the horn sounds, another 10-9 round for Thomson IMO.

Round Three: Thomson treis to shoot early, gets stuffed. Cavalcante bullrushes Thomson onto the cage, but Thomson has the body lock and puts Cavalcante on the cage, throwing knees, looks for a sweep, Cavalcante fights it off but is put back on the cage. 4:00 left, Cavalcante goes for a body lock, throws THomson to the ground, has Thomson's back, Thomson rolls to his back and gives up full mount to Cavalcante! Thomson quickly closes guard and has Cavalcante wrapped around the neck, underhook on his right arm, 3:30 left. Cavalcante hasn't been able to do anything yet, Thomson tries to pop his hips for an escape, Cavalcante keeps him planted, THomson again underhooks to limit Cavalcante's movement and tries for butterfly guard, works from teh ground some more, pulls rubber guard, looks into a camera and throws up a fist of defiance! Crowd pops, 2:30 left, Cavalcante is trying to work but not getting much room. 2:10 Cavalcante trying to push THomson towards the cage, THomson uses the movement to escape and take this back to his feet. Cavalcante throws a big right and rops THomson, dives in, Thomson has full guard and is hammering Cavalcante with punches to the head from the bottom. Cavalcante works Thomson's head into the cage, but isn't trying for any punches here. THomson has a headlock and sitting up on the cage, and is looking up at the referee wondering if he's going to break this up since Cavalcante isn't advancing the action. 50 seconds left, Cavalcante starts moving a little, postures up, on his feet, Thomson trying for submission attempts from the ground to keep the referee from standing this up. Cavalcante is able to spin him around, 15 seconds left, Cavalcante stands up, Thomson upkicks him, Cavalcante dives back in to try to throw punches but Thomson closes the guard and finishes out the round without letting Cavalcante score a punch as the fight ends.

I myself am scoring this one 30-27 for Thomson, while Cavalcante looked dominant in Round 3, he didn't punish Thomson, Thomson didn't look to be hurt and when he was on the ground he was working most of the action from the bottom.

OFFICIAL DECISION:  Josh Thomson d. Gesias Cavalante by Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27).  Thomson says he didn't feel he did everything he wanted here, didn't have a good fight, and wondered how one judge even scored this 30-27, and suggests they need to go to a fight clinic to learn how to score. Hey, don't complain, buddy, I think they made the right call here.

Strikeforce Welterweight Championship
champion Nick Diaz (22-7-0, 169.5 lbs ) vs. K.J. Noons (9-1-0, 169 lbs)

Noons is the former and undefeated EliteXC Lightweight champion, and in fact defeated Diaz for that title. Noons only had once chance to defend that title successfully before he was stripped of it due to being unable to come to a contract agreement with EliteXC, only a few weeks before the promotion closed. Noons continued that undefeated streak at DREAM 13 before he was signed to Strikeforce in March, where he picked up wins over Andrew Amado, Conor Huen and Jorge Gurgel. Diaz, however, has not lost a single fight since his loss to Noons, working his way through DREAM and Strikeforce until he defeated Marius Zaromskis in January to win the inagural Welterweight title. Josh Rosenthol is the referee in charge.

Noons comes out working his boxing early, but Diaz catches him with a left cross at 3:30 to take the boxer down and score side control, but he spends 45 seconds just sitting in side control not doing anything other than a headlock, Diaz starts moving around, Noons is already prepared for a butterfly guard and Diaz only succeeds in scooting Noons around. Diaz tries to step over and posture at 2:15 left, Noons is able to escape and take this back to stand up, 2:00 left. Diaz loads up with a right hook that hits the body, Noons returns fire with sparring and showing off his boxing discipline, but he's not moving his head and leaves himself up for a head kick from Diaz that is just barely blocked, 90 seconds left. Noons counters with a left jab, loads up on combos, 55 seconds left. Diaz tries for a head shot, Noons ducks it and pummels Diaz's body! Noons looking for a few uppercuts, switches up to jabs, Diaz just barely out of range and is now doing some shit talking, 10 seconds left, Noons loads up with a few more jabs that Diaz just barely dodges. I'll give this 10-9 to Diaz, just barely though, this was close, the takedown made it for him.

Round 2: Diaz opens up the round with more shit talking, Noons blasts him a few times and starts talking shit of his own. Diaz is bleeding now and Noons is talking it up some more, both men continuing to seve up strikes, but Noons delivering with body shots, Diaz tries a few kicks, Noons checks him and returns a few of his own. Diaz switches up to southpaw and gets in a few jabs on Noons. Noons responds with some big kicks, then they exchange big body shots. Down to 2:00 left already and its' been a slug fest here sofar! Noons catches Diaz on the nose witha right, and a left, Diaz's nose and face is looking swollen, he's breathing out of his mouth, I'm sure his nose is broken. Diaz now switching up and throwing kicks, Noons working in with jabs, rusehs Diaz with a knee to the body, putting him in the cage, 45 seconds left. Back to the middle, Noons going back and working him over with body shots again. Diaz reaching out to paw, Noons is checking him, 5 seconds left, Noons closes out with a big right, another right and a kick to the body! Diaz looks like the cut is in the crease of the right side of his nose.  10-9 for Noons for sure, Strikeforce announcers agree with me, 19-all. Fight doctor checks out the cut, he says it's okay.

Round 3: Noons is now throwing those punches a little heavier now, Diaz keeps aiming for the head, Noons is blocking most of them and countering with body shots. Diaz is starting to hit a few right jabs in rhythm now, Noons counters with big hooks that don't find a home, Noons throwing more big hooks and overhands, they're looking sloppy and getting whiffed. Diaz is being more patient and scoring with selective punches, 3:00 left. Diaz with a right leg kick, Noons returns one. It's all boxing up to this point, Noons is starting to fhind his shots again, sofar according to CompuStrike they're nearly dead-even on strikes thrown/landed percentage. 1:!5 left, Diaz starts throwing more kicks, Noons responds in kind, but then we go right back to the punching competition, 30 seconds left, Diaz with a nice body shot, clinches, releases and connects with a right, 10 seconds, Noons with a big left, gets blocked, Diaz responds with kicks and we're at the horn! I'm gonna go 10-9 for Diaz here, Shamrock and Millitech again agree. Noons is now bleeding from his face as well.

Round 4: The slugfest doesn't stop as both men for the first time in their careers actually head into the championship rounds. Both men throwing occasional kicks but they're keeping this standing up and looking like solid traditional boxers here. Finally 1:30 left in the round, Diaz with a Thai clinch and a knee, but doesn't do much damage. Noons is trying to push Diaz towards the cage, Diaz starts to respond and Noons backs off. Diaz tries to clinch and Noons punishes him with several body shots. Noons starts to move in to take advantage of it, Diaz catches him with an axe kick, doesn't follow it up but Noons respects him and keeps his distance! Both men take it easy for the last 20 seconds, Diaz keeps Noons at bay with a few blatant axe kicks. I think I gotta give it to Diaz for this round as well, his punching was hitting first and hitting hard, Noons looked like he was playing catch up here.

Round 5: Ranallo Mauro asks Frank Shamrock and Pat Millitech if Noons needs to finish this round out in order to win, they agree, and I do as well, I think Noons is down here, he's gotta get a KO or Submission here, and I'm not sure he has it in him. Diaz gets a clinch at 3:40 and pummells Noons' head like a punching bag! Diaz tries for a takedown at 2:45, Noons is able to stuff it, I don't think Diaz was committed to it though. Noons is backing up Diaz to the cage, Diaz counters and moves it back to the middle. Neither man has slowed down on their striking, they look like they've got gas left. Noons plants his fist right in the middle of Diaz's face, Diaz counters with a takedown attempt that puts Noons into the corner, Noons is able to stop a takedown though. Diaz now mixes it up with a knee attempt and a roundhouse kick, easily evaded, and Noons counters him with a solid right to the head. DIaz tries to move in and clinch, Noons pulls out, 60 seconds left. Fans are starting to boo the action here, both men throwing for broke here, Diaz mixes it up with a few kicks, and they close it out strong, bloody and battered. Pat Militech says that he had this fight scored two rounds apiece coming into this.

Compustrike numbers: 194/443/41.5% Strikes Landed/Attempted for Diaz, 310/611/51% for Noons. That's A LOT of strikes for MMA. I think I'm going to end up giving this one to Diaz 49-46, Noons only clearly won the second round to me.

OFFICIAL DECISION: 48-47, 49-47, 49-46 for the winner by Unanimous Decision... AND STILL CHAMPION NICK DIAZ!  Noons says that Diaz flat out beat him fair-and-square. Mauro asks them both if they're wanting a rubber match, both of them say they're can do that but they don't care who Strikeforce puts them up against next.  Hopefully next time we'll get more MMA action, while I liked the striking, I don't watch MMA for just boxing, so I'm slightly disappointed by our main event.
