Editorial: Top 5 Dangerous Finishers to Take

The finisher in Pro Wrestling should signal the end of the match that nobody should kick out of... or at least kick out of rarely. However, there are some finishers that are extremely dangerous and you have to wonder what the guy is thinking taking that move in the fear of that the guy could get severely hurt. So in honor of that fear, Here are my Top 5 Dangerous Finishers to take.

As a precaution, I am only listing finishers and not signature moves, so Seth Rollins' Buckle Bomb will not be on this list, even though it is the cause of the arm injury of Finn Balor and the retirement of Sting. I am also not adding finishers that were used once or twice, like the Ganzo Bomb. If they were to be added, Neither would be #1 though.

5: Ken Patera's Swinging Full Nelson

This is an old-school move that hasn't been duplicated since he last used it. Basically the way Patera does this move is that he wrenches the neck and adds in the torque of going round and round ala an Airplane Spin. Add those two together, it's a prime example of if something goes wrong with this, the neck goes bye bye. While it may be the tamest of finishers on the list, it's still quite dangerous to look at and there are no cases of any major damage done to any talent because of this move.

4: LOD's Doomsday Device

This move is all dependent on how the person doing the clothesline off the top rope and who's lifting you up. Animal is usually super safe when it comes to this, but Hawk is quite a jerk when delivering the finish. Most of the time, Animal would flip the hapless victim over when Hawk came close, but sometimes the person taking the move would land wrong and hurt themselves badly. Case in point: JJ Dillon at the first War Games. I'm certain there are other jobbers who got injured by this, but it's really dangerous looking and could be hell on someone if it's performed wrong.

3: Any Variant of the Piledriver

I'm including the Tombstone, the Canadian Destroyer and any Spike Piledriver in this spot, save for one, which will be talked about in a bit. While the Piledriver looks devastating, it is quite safe in certain instances. However, it is outright dangerous when done wrong and there are lots of instances about this, none more famous than “Stone Cold” Steve Austin and his broken neck when he got nailed by Owen Hart's Tombstone. You can also throw in Taz's botched Spike Piledriver when he took it from Eddie Guerrero and 2 Cold Scorpio which broke his neck. It's always dangerous, and that's why some territories banned the move and it's a forbidden move today, unless it's done safely, much like how Undertaker does it.

2: The Beverly Brother's Shaker Heights Spike

This is one of those finishers that I'm shocked got greenlit for action. What the move entails is one of the brothers lifts up the victim and the other drives their head into the mat. If done right, the victim goes down like if he were taking a flapjack. However, it was often done wrong and the jobber would crash land on the top of his head and wind up getting injured in the process. There are two major documented incidents of this and both looked like the jobber broke their neck. When the duo reunited in WCW in 1997, this move was discarded and replaced by their old finishers, an aided Piledriver or a variant of the Doomsday Device.

1: Scott Steiner's Steiner Screwdriver

Scott SteinerLet's combine some of the most dangerous moves in wrestling: The Stalling Brainbuster, the Tombstone Piledriver and combine them into one move. If done right, it looks impressive, but Scott Steiner has never done it right. Instead of letting the move happen naturally, he would toss his opponent up a couple inches and then drive his head into the mat. I'm not talking in the kayfabe sense, but in the dangerous, trying to paralyze the guy sense. There's a GIF of him doing this in Japan where he KO's an opponent with this move. I wince just looking at that GIF, moreso than any finisher known to man.

That's my list. Some honorable mentions for finishers are the Authors of Pain and their Double Powerbomb, which sounds dangerous, but is just a crap looking move. The Vertebreaker and the Styles Clash look dangerous, but it's wholly dependent on how the person takes the move.
