Editorial: In Defense Of... American Top Team In GFW

While the latest news stories about GFW/TNA/Impact/WCW2.0 are the same as they ever were i.e. financial backers trying to get out of the business, morale being low, big star needing rehab, KM being a dick to people and calling female fans who hate him "trannies", I want to talk about my thoughts on a major storyline within the show itself: Bobby Lashley and American Top Team.

The storyline is as follows: Dan Lambert and his merry band of MMA fighters, including Colby Covington, originally showed up to Destination X to root on Bobby Lashley. After he was defeated by Matt Sydal in a #1 contender's match, Dan Lambert jumped referee Brian Hebner. The next week, they were read the riot act by new (old) authority figure, Jim Cornette. During said riot act, Dan Lambert planted the seed in Lashley's head that he wants him to give up pro wrestling and focus full time in MMA. After Lashley was tossed from the Gauntlet for the Gold by Moose, American Top Team proceeds to cause more damage jumping Moose and later on Jeff Jarrett, namely Colby Covington. The week after, Dan Lambert, Lashley and a bunch of ATT guys had a big interview segment, where Lambert and others tell Lashley that MMA is where the money is and he should be focusing more on that, but Lashley wants to do both and looks at pro wrestling for career longevity, saying he can do it "10-20 more years".

So the storyline is a struggle between the ruthless businessman in Dan Lambert wanting one of his stars in American Top Team (Lashley), to give up on what he enjoys doing (Wrestling) to focus more on something that is short term for big bucks (MMA, notably Bellator)rather than long term for big bucks. Looking at the storyline like that, this isn't as bad as people are making it out to be. Actually, it could become the mega-face turn that the Lashley character could use, since one could only be "Walking Armageddon" for so long before it becomes stale and his character was starting to become that by Slammiversary.

What is happening to Lashley right now is that he's being overly persuaded either by words or force by Dan Lambert and his goon squad. Over the course of the next few weeks, we'll see some solidarity between Lashley and American Top Team, but that all comes to a head at Bound For Glory. It's likely there will be a match between Lashley and Moose at the event where Lashley will have the backing of ATT and Moose will have the backing of... a group of GFW people. What will happen during the match is that there will be some ill communication between Lashley and Lambert. Near the end of the match, Lambert will do something to cost Lashley the match and the big payday after the GFW people chase ATT out of the arena.

After that, Lambert will brow beat Lashley in the ring, and give Lambert a gigantic spear. The crowd will pop for Lashley, thus making him a face for the foreseeable future, maybe against heel champion Eli Drake. You could have him be built back up by earning the respect by beating Moose, Chris Adonis, and Matt Sydal within a couple months before beating Eli Drake for the belt... as a world conquering face who fought for what he believed in and would be seen as a hero and can have a nice stable run again.

Sometimes it pays to look on the bright side of life and be able to find some light in a really gloomy storyline. I hope it works out that way and not like the multiple nWo knockoffs like Aces & Eights, Immortal, World Elite, Main Event Mafia, Beat Down Clan. At least, that's the hope.

Before I leave, #F--kSexyStar.
