NXT 2.0

Written by Nickolye

Nickolye's WWE NXT recap for January 11, 2022 at 8 PM ET! The landscape of NXT 2.0 has changed now that Bron Breakker is the new NXT Champion. The new breed of NXT is making a statement, as they will continue to prove tonight when AJ Styles takes on Grayson Waller, Xyon Quinn battles Santos Escobar with the winner leaving with Elektra Lopez, and also we'll get a "Crowbar on a Pole Match" between Pete Dunne and Tony D'Angelo! NXT has a makeover in 2.0 fashion. Hit F5 or refresh as often as you like for the latest updates!

We get clips from NXT: New Year's Evil last week where Tommaso Ciampa was unsuccessful in defending his NXT Championship, losing to Bron Breakker. When NXT comes on the air, ring announcer Samantha Irvin introduces the NEW NXT Champion, Bron Breakker! The new champion comes out to first give compliments to the ex-champ Tommaso Ciampa who showed him respect post-match after losing the title, then wants every person in the back to know that he is ready for anybody who wants to challenge him because he is the new NXT Champion who will outwork and outlast anybody who comes his way. Short and sweet!

Legado Del Fantasma head to the ring for the first match of the night, and Santos Escobar crosses paths with Breakker looking at the title and his possible future.

* Santos Escobar vs. Xyon Quinn
  [Winner leaves with Elektra Lopez]

You read that stipulation right - the winner of this match will leave with Elektra Lopez by their side. Quinn strikes quick and early to get things started and he dominated the former NXT Cruiserweight Champion in the early part of this match. Elektra Lopez is watching this match from the balcony with a stoic look on her face. Quinn is in control of this match throwing Escobar all over the ring as we take our first commercial break.

We go to picture-in-picture here, Escobar tries to fight back, but Quinn takes him back down with a spining back elbow and gets a 2-count. Quinn throws him out the ring in front of the announce table, they fight there for a while, Raul Mendoza creates a distraction but Quinn tosses Joaquin Wilde on the floor, and Escobar finally gets a break taking him down with a suicide dive. After more brawling outside the ring, Escobar puts Quinn in a leglock untill Quinn reaches the ropes to break the hold, and he continues to work on the leg.

When we come back, Escobar has him in an ankle lock and grapevines the leg for added pressure. Escobar does a running front chopblock, covers for 2, and Elektra Lopez has now made her way to ringside while Escobar attacks the leg some more and dropkicks his knee in the ropes. Escobar slaps him on the chest, hits a gamengiri, but Quinn blasts him with a body block and takes back control. Quinn launches him with a big hiptoss, running shoulder to the midsection, Mendoza causes the distraction, Escobar throws him over the ropes, picks him up, but Elektra blocks his path. Quinn throws him back into the ring, blocks a suicide dive, Elektra feels on his chest, nods at him, and KICKS QUINN WITH A LOWBLOW!! Mendoza throws Quinn back into the ring, Escobar hits the Phantom Driver, and covers for 3! WINNER: SANTOS ESCOBAR!

Wade Barrett gloats with "I told you so! This is familia. This is Legado Del Fantasma stronger than ever." Legado Del Fantasma are all smiles now that they got one over on Quinn.

We get words from Tony D'Angelo saying it's a mistake for anybody to come at him. All he wanted was Pete Dunne's mouthpiece from NXT WarGames as a souvenir. "Tonight, you're gonna learn that Tony D is in charge." After that we get clips from Raw last night where Grayson Waller made his presense felt attacking AJ Styles. Breaktime.

After the break, Mandy Rose is having a photo shoot poolside in a bikini with the NXT Women's Championship. In the video package, Mandy Rose talks about how good she is.

* Damon Kemp vs. Cameron Grimes

Kemp out-wrestles at the start, Grimes does an armdrag, and Malcolm Bivens is on the stage looking on. Grimes jumps off the middle ropes, Kemp catches him for a belly-to-belly suplex, and Bivens is applauding him. Grimes fights back, hits a diving crossbody, hits the Cave-In for the win. WINNER: CAMERON GRIMES!

Post-match, Grimes says there are no more games, because he wants some gold in his life. We go backstage to Joe Gacy thanking the higher-ups to allow him and Harland to compete as a tag team in the Dusty Tag Team Classic. Breaktime.

When we come back with pictures of Von Wagner attacking any and everyone in his path.

* Edris Enofé & Malik Blade vs. Joe Gacy & Harland

Enofé and Gacy start the match, back-and-forth they go, and Gacy hits a spinning urinage for a 1-count. Enofé pulls him away from tagging out, rolls him up for 1, Blade tags in, dropkicks Gacy, ducks a swing, and gives him an armdrag. Enofé tags back in, Blade hits a flipping neckbreaker, Enofé covers for 2, Gacy side-steps him and finally tags out. Blade tags in, Harland just demolishes him, running knee to the back of the head, knocks Enofé down and throws him into the ringpost. Harland slams Blade's head into the turnbuckle so much and for so long that he counts to 5 and disqualifies Harland! WINNERS by DQ and Advancing to the Dusty Cup: MALIK BLADE & EDRIS ENOFE!

We get a video package all about hyping up Imperium. "And to us, the mat is sacred." It's Dunne vs. D'angelo next!

* "Crowbar on a Pole" Match: Tony D'Angelo vs. Pete Dunne

Both men look at the crowbar, the bell dings, they both go for it but D'Angelo gets the first hit. Dunne is not deterred as he counters a suplex with the kimura lock and takes him down to stomp on his shoulder. Dunne goes for the crowbar, D'Angelo brings him down and locks in the bearhug, but Dunne counters again and stomps on his shoulder. D'Angelo pulls him down from trying to get the crowbar, does a couple of hockey punches, and catches his leg for a capture suplex. Both men are climbing in the corner, Dunne stomps on D'Angelo's head, the crowbar is in reach, they both come down, D'Angelo suplexes him in from the apron and turns it to a falcon arrow before a commercial break.

We come back live to see D'Angelo working over Dunne's arm. We look at the plunder around the ringside area including a chair, kendo stick, ladder and other weapons but they were told that they will be disqualified since only the crowbar is the would-be legal weapon. Dunne stomps on his shoulder again, does an armbreaker, stomps on his elbow, climbs up the turnbuckles, D'Angelo grabs him for a release German suplex, he goes up now and unhooks the crowbar. Dunne ducks the crowbar, D'Angelo hooked it on the ropes and rolls out the ring scared of the inevitable. D'Angelo pulls Dunne out the ring, back suplex onto the apron, rolls back in to grab the crowbar, Dunne tries to block it on the announce table, avoids the hit, Dunne hits the step-up enzuigiri, breaks his arm again, breaks the ref's count at 8, brings the crowbar into the ring and applies a crossface chickenwing using the crowbar, but D'Angelo manages to counter hitting a neckbreaker using the crowbar, and covers for a near-fall!

Both men fight over the crowbar, Dunne block the neckbreaker with a forearm, gamengiri, kneedrop to the arm, swings the crowbar but misses, lands on his feet from the German suplex, drop-toehold, and pulls the crowbar across his mouth. D'Angelo fights him off, grabs a chair, Dunne stomps on his hand, both men plus the ref all try to have possession of the chair, the ref takes it to prevent a DQ, Dunne counters the capture suplex, snaps the fingers, D'Angelo gets his foot on the bottom rope to break, they trade forearms each with a hand on the crowbar, D'Angelo with a double-leg takedown onto the chair with Dunne's head also hitting the bottom turnbuckle, throws him into the pole, and CLUBS HIM IN THE FACE WITH THE CROWBAR!! 1-2-3! WINNER: TONY D'ANGELO!

Grayson Waller gets interviewed, gloats about himself, talks about WrestleMania Moments, and claims to create his own Grayson Waller moment. Wendy Choo finally wakes up to get ready for her match teaming with Indi and Persia. Breaktime.

After the break, we get a video package for Toxic Attraction boasting that they have all the gold, and this time it's Gigi Dolin and Jacy Jayne talking about being the champions and teaming with Mandy Rose.

* Indi Hartwell, Persia Pirotta & Wendy Choo vs. Amari Miller, Kacy Catanzaro & Kayden Carter

Indi and Amari start the match here, and Wendy is already asleep on the ring apron while holding onto the tag rope, so Wade Barrett guesses that she has narcolepsy. Amari dropkicks Indi out the ring, Kacy tags in as Amari goes for the suicide dive onto Persia, Kayden tags in and does a diving crossbody to Indi, and Kacy hits a corkscrew plancha onto them as well. Briggs and Jensen are wacthing the match on a monitor backstage. Back in the ring, Kayden hits a spinning hammerlock flatliner, and Wendy Choo is asleep on the ropes! Kayden covers for 2, pulls her away, Indi pulls Kayden away from tagging, so Kayden dropkicks Persia off the apron, rolls up Indi in a sunset flip for 2, then they both knock each other down.

Amari and Wendy both get the hot tags, Wendy kicks and clotheslines her, does an overhead belly-to-belly throw, cartwheel forearm smash, exploder suplex, covers and Kacy breaks it up. Persia hits Catanzaro with a sit-out powerbomb, Kayden kicks Pirotta in the head, Indi gives Carter a spinebuster, Amari hits Hartwell with a lungblower, and all six women are down. Barrett: "She's asleep, pin her!" Wendy wakes up to kick Miller off of her, makes the tag, Persia picks her up, Indi tags in, Persia hits a spinning facebuster, Indi hits the springboad elbow drop to Miller's back, and covers for the 3-count! WINNERS: INDI HARTWELL, PERSIA PIROTTA & WENDY CHOO!

MSK are walking the halls backstage and they come across the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Cup trophy. They reminisce over the trophy from last year, talk about all of the tag teams in the division, Dakoa Kai shows up too and she remembers the time when she won the trophy. Dakota leaves but leaves a fair warning: "Nothing defies friendship more... than success."

Solo Sikoa is wrapping up his wrists, doesn't care if Boa has paint on his face of not, but the stats are only going to show that Sikoa won the match. We shall see!

After a commercial break, Kay Lee Ray destroys the photo shoot where Mandy Rose's pictures were taken. She even knocks off the camera from the stand.

* Solo Sikoa vs. Boa

Sikoa is ready for him at the bell as he side-steps him and goes on offense, but Boa connects with a roundhouse to the neck and strikes with elbows and kicks. Sikoa ducks a kick and takes him down for mounted punches and chops and uppercuts. Boa throws him into the ringpost, sends him back into the ring, and kicks him in the hamstring and gut. Boa hits a couple of kitchen sink strikes, delivers a double-arm suplex for a 2-count, and puts him in a chinlock as both men are busted open. Sikoa cacthes his leg hits knee strikes and elbows, running senton, does the Cactus Clothesline and both men are down in front of the announce table. The referee starts his count, Sikoa throws him into the steel steps, Boa slams him on the announce table, and shoves him into the ringpost as the ref counts all the way to 10. DOUBLE COUNTOUT.

They continue fighting as if they didn't hear the bell, Sikoa hits him with a chair, and they fight to the back. Elsewhere, AJ Styles is interviewed and he loves seeing this kind of competition in NXT. He says Grayson Waller has nervous confidence, he's proud of the Georgia Bulldogs won the national championship last night, vows to headline WrestleMania, and plans to defeat Waller tonight.

From there we get a video recap of the championship unification match at NXT: New Year's Evil last week between NXT Cruiserweight Champion Roderick Strong and eventual winner NXT North American Champion Carmelo Hayes. Afterwards, Carmelo Hayes and Trick Williams pull up in the parking lot, they give the security guard at the door his keys to keep the car there, and they'll be right back after words from the champ.

After the commercial break, Solo Sikoa and Boa are STILL fighting backstage! Sikoa throws a chair at him and throws him into a couple of trash barrels while a couple referees shout at them to stop. Boa fights back throwing him into steel girders, but Sikoa throws him over some cargo crates. A FIREBALL bursts up into Sikoa's face blinding him! Robbie Brookside and Norman Smiley show up to tend to the superstar as Boa stands up with his face painted as his "powers" took over. Vic Joseph informs us that Von Wagner's suspension has been lifted and his fine has been paid, Barrett asks by who, but Joseph doesn't have an answer.

We continue back to the show as Trick Williams and the North American Champion Carmelo Hayes are introduced. Williams is happy for his boy because they are a unified unit, and they go together well. Carmelo Hayes says last week he had a tough match against a tough opponent, so he wants to take a moment of silence to commemorate the reign of the former Cruiserweight Champion. What he really wants is for the people to celebrate HIM as the champion, because "numbers don't lie and Melo don't miss." Hayes calls himself the most scintillating champion ever in NXT as Williams plays hype man. "Because it's around my waist, this is THE 'A' Championship. So you can step up and get stepped on, and that's all it is and that's all it's ever gon' be."

AJ Styles music plays to cut off the champion's celebration as the Phenomenal One heads out for his FIRST-EVER match in NXT! After the break, Carmelo Hayes heads back outside to get his keys but the guard doesn't have them. Cameron Grimes is laughing with Melo's keys, says that in 2021 he would've done donuts around the building, but in 2022 he will keep it straight and he's coming for the championship. "In 2022, I'm going TO THE MOON. Don't miss." Williams holds Hayes back from going after Grimes. Next week, the 1st Round of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic begins!

* AJ Styles vs. Grayson Waller

Waller is playing games and milking it up, but Styles grabs him in the collar-and-elbow and backs him up with a clean break. Styles puts him in the side headlock, Waller reverses, Styles rolls him up for 1, hammerlock, Waller taunts him, so Styles kicks him in the leg and chops him on the chest. Styles kicks him in the leg again, hits a pendulum backbreaker, body slam, jumping kneedrop, and gets a 1-count. Waller trips him into the turnbuckles, chops him back, blocks a suplex, jabs him, and Styles dropkicks him. Waller trips him on the apron, hits a neckbreaker on the ropes, then does a baseball slide into a clothesline before our final commercial break.

We get picture-in-picture here and Waller is adoring the newfound attention from the crowd. He throws AJ back into the ring and just starts choking him on the ropes, then applies a standing cravate, throws him down, and puts him in a kneeing cravate.

Not much happened in the break, so we recap the neckbreaker in the ropes BEFORE the break. AJ fights out of the hold, but Waller hits a jumping knee, AJ punches him in the neck, slips off his shoulders, hits the Phenomenal Blitz, clotheslines him, and hits the basement forearm smash. AJ hits a clothesline/splash in the corner, Ushigoroshi, gets a 2-count, but Waller avoids the Styles Clash and rolls out the ring, so AJ hits a slingshot forearm smash and throws him back in. Waller rolls out the ring again, drops his neck on the ropes, hits a discus forearm, connects the crossover elbow drop from the middle ropes and gets a near-fall! Styles goes for a German suplex but it's blocked, so AJ goes for the Calf Crusher, but then Grayson gets pinned for a 2-count. Waller goes for a sunset flip, gets a 2-count, hits the sit-out powerbomb, and covers for 2.5! Styles clocks him from the apron, calls for the finish, Waller dodges out the ring to duck under him, but rolls back in to hit the Stunner, and covers for 2! Waller sets him up on the top, Styles slips down, sets up the Styled Clash but Waller avoids it, AJ hits the Pele Kick, and delivers the brainbuster! Styles steps onto the apron, hits the Phenomenal Forearm, and covers for 1-2-3! WINNER: "THE PHENOMENAL" AJ STYLES!!

AJ: "Hey Waller, loved giving you that ass-kicking. You're good, but you're not phenomenal. But your night is not over yet. I wanna introduce you to one of my friends." LA KNIGHT IS BACK! Waller freaks out because LA Knight hasn't been seen since Waller laid him out in the parking lot weeks ago, so he runs in the ring, turns around and Knight clotheslines him a couple of times, and punches him until he falls out the ring! Knight throws him over the announce table, bck into the ring, hits a lariat, and clotheslines him out the ring! Welcome back LA Knight! AJ Styles pulls Knight to the middle of the ring, they embrace, and they pose for the fans to close the show.
