The sherdog.com website posted this week that Phil Baroni, who tested positive for steroids after a Strikeforce show back in June, has had his California State Athletic Commission suspension reduced from one year to six months retroactive from June 22. This makes Baroni eligible to return to action in December. Otherwise his fine of $2500 for the test failure was upheld.
Ben Rothwell has been making some noise lately about his desire to part from IFL due a conflict over his appearance in the "Grand Prix" event, but that's not all Rothwell has had to say! Five Ounces of Pain reported that on the Sherdog forums Rothwell said quote unquote "FUCK MATT HUGHES!" Apparently Rothwell was not happy with Hughes' exit from Militech Fighting Systems and "when I hear him talk about God and do this and do that and I love my wife, I want to puke." Kind of a shame the difference in weight classes would never allow them to fight, there's some good heat potential here, particularly if Hughes ends up trying to bury him in a rebuttal.
There's conflicting news on whether or not David Terrell will make his fight for UFC 78 against Ed 'Short Fuse' Herman. Both www.TaggRadio.com and MMANews.com are reporting the story, although the latter notes they got it from the former and the former has a spotty record when it comes to factual information. Allegedly he has an ankle injury but we'll update further when there's any official confirmation.
Last but not least EliteXC announced some new weight classes on www.mmafighting.com for the "safety of fighters." We'll let you draw your own conclusions about what or WHO they are referring to with that and just share the info with you below.
EliteXC President Gary Shaw announced today that the promotion will implement new weight classes to improve the safety of its competitors.
“I am very concerned in the mixed martial arts world of this drastic cutting of weight,” said Shaw. “Fighters can fit better in these weight classes and fight for world titles without endangering their health.”
EliteXC will remove the 155-pound weight class and add 140, 150 and 160-pound divisions. The company's weight classes are now: 140, 150, 160, 170, 185, 205, 265 and 265+ pounds.
Champions will be crowned in each weight class.
