UFC 84: Ill Will PPV Recap

Killa Kev will be providing live coverage of UFC 84 this evening starting at 10pm ET. The dark matches are starting at aproximately 7:30pm ET, Lady J is e-mailing the results in as they happen.

Preliminary Matches:

Shane Carwin vs. Christian Wellisch
Shane Carwin d. Christian Wellisch by knockout at 44 sec in Round 1.

Jason Tan vs. Kim Dong Hyun.
Hyun DOMINATES Tan all of 1st round but he survives. Kim Dong Hyun wins by TKO at 0:25 in Round 3.

Jon Koppenhaver vs. Yoshiyuki Yoshida
Yoshida wins by anaconda choke at 0:56 in Round 1.

Rich Clementi vs. Terry Etim
After 3 rounds, Clementi wins by unanimous decision, 29-28.

Rameau Sokoudjou vs. Kazuhiro Nakamura
Sokoudjou wins by TKO (fight stopped) at end of Round 1.

Ivan Salaverry vs. Rousimar Palhares
Palhares wins by armbar submission, 2:36 of Round 1.


It's showtime from the sold-out MGM Grand Garden Arena, it's UFC 84: Ill Will. Mike Goldberg welcomes us, and starts us off with discussion of BJ Penn vs. Sean Sherk. Goldberg introduces his co-host Joe Rogan. Rogan & Goldberg give a brief run-down for the match-ups for the night.

Thiago Silva (205, 12-0-0) vs. Antonio Mendes (203, 14-2-0)

Bruce Buffer introduces us to the first match of the evening, Herb Dean our opening referee. Mendes goes right for a kick and knees to put Sylva on his back, Sylva recovers, then goes right back down with a series of knees. Mendes lets him back up, goes on the attack again, putting Sylva on the fence. Sylva turns it around with a double underhook, pulls Mendes to the ground, straddles him and starts laying in some solid punches. Sylva tries to roll out, Mendes sets him up for a choke. Sylva covers up, will not defend himself, the fight is stopped. WINNER: Thialgo Silva, 2:24 of Round 1 by TKO.

Tito Ortiz (205, 16-5-1) vs. Lyoto Machida (203, 12-0-0)

Ortiz says that this will be his last fight in UFC, win, lose or draw. The fans certainly seem excited to see him. Machida gets no respect from the fans during his introduction. Yves Lavigne is our referee for this match. Machida starts with some low kicks, testing the waters. Ortiz takes a kick of his own, Machida responds immediately with a kick. Ortiz presses in with a few swings, Machida remains calm. Ortiz tries to shoot, Machido blocks it. Ortiz with a few strikes that Machida sidesteps. Ortiz shots in with a knee, Machida shoves it off, responds with a kick. Machida with a high kick, Ortiz holds him, Machida shoves him off. Ortiz with a few punches, Machida steps back, creating some distance. Ortiz is having a problem finding a way to attack Machida, nothing is really connecting. Machida connects with a few kicks, Ortiz is holding the center of the ring. Tito tries to grab him severeal times, Machido keeps escaping. Machida connects with a few kicks, then shoots in with a body lock to take down Ortiz! Machida with side control but the horn sounds to end Round 1!

Chuck Liddell is shown in the crowd as we start the second round, which looks like more of the first round, Ortiz holding the center of the ring, trying strikes, and Machida easily evading. The fans are subtly starting to boo the lack of real action here. Ortiz shoots in, Machida evades, hits another kick that connects near the head, then backs off again and lets Ortiz re-take the center of the ring. Machido with a few more stray kicks that connects. Machida with a right that Ortiz blocks, then a left that is again blocked. Machida with a fake low kick, then going high with the left. Ortiz starts moving in, Machida eludes again. Ortiz goes for a trip, Machida shoves it off. Ortiz with a high kick, Machida steps back to avoid, Machida with an inside leg kick in response. Ortiz shoots with a strike, Machida with a front face lock, Ortiz moves to guard, Machida stands up. 45 seconds left in the round, Machida with a knee to the face, Ortiz backs off to break. Ortiz is cut open, Machido looks for some offense, Ortiz counters and starts to fire but the horn blows to end Round 2.

Ortiz gets cleaned up before we start the round, he's complaining about Machida avoiding the fight. Rogan correctly points out that Machida is doing a great job of avoiding and picking his spots to attack. Round three starts much the same as round two. Ortiz finally shoots in for a clench, Machida ties him up and then pushes him off. The fans are getting more and more upset that much isn't happening. Ortiz shoots again, Machida again sidesteps it. Ortiz with a high kick to the head, Machida blocks. Machida with a few strikes, Ortiz tries to tie him up, Machida blocks it. Ortiz shoots in, gets some knes in, Machida puts him on the cage. Ortiz turns him around on the cage, Machida doing a good job of blocking. Ortiz grabs a leg, Machida again breaks it, moves back in for a clinch, Ortiz is on the cage. Ortiz tries a few knees and punches, Machida is holding his own.

Referee warns them to get moving, and then breaks them, 1:40 left in the bout. Machida with a knee that sends Ortiz down, Machida with the ground n poundj, Ortiz fighting to escape, Ortiz is rocked! Ortiz moves to full guard, Machida is trying to escape. Ortiz with shots to the back of the head. Machida fights, Ortiz locks in a triangle, and an armbar, but Machida breaks them both! Ortiz goes for another triangle with 10 seconds left, Machida breaks it, and the horn sounds! We're going to a judge's decision. WINNER: by unanimous decision, 30-27... Lyoto Machida.

The fans are booing the decision, but clearly Machida did a great job of escaping nearly ever move, and picking very well placed shots. Joe Rogan with the interview, Machida says that he felt like he was in trouble in the end, but would have rather died than tap out. Machida felt that this was a great match and was honored to have fought Ortiz. Ortiza felt that he had Machida for a brief moment, but just couldn't do much of anything. Rogan asks about the future of Ortiz, he says that he is not done fighting for three or four more years, that the past with Dana White was bullshit, but the fans would definitely see more fights out of him. Rogan asks if he's definitely done with UFC, Ortiz says he isn't sure, he has an upcoming book tour and time to think about it. Ortiz thanks the fans for their support, and recognizes his trainers, family and sponsors.

Wilson Gouveia (205, 10-4-0) vs. Goran Reljic (205, 7-0-0)

Dwayne Johnson gets 15 seconds of fame on the camera as Bruce Buffer makes the ring introductions. Herb Dean is our referee again. Reljic and Gouveia trade a few punches to start, Reljic with several kicks, leaving their marks on Gouvela's shoulders. Gouveia tries to respond, Reljic easily evades. Gouveia doesn't look very frustrated, is patiently trying to find his place. Reljic continues to find places to land kicks. Gouveia throws some hands, Reljic defends, Gouveia moves in and takes Reljic down, Reljic immediately moves to guard. Reljic tries to set up for a gogoplata, but the horn sounds before he can do much, end of Round 1.

Gouveia holds the center of the ring to start Round 2, that isn't stopping Reljic from throwing solid kicks. Gouveia goes on the attacks, connects with a right, Reljic goes for closed guard, Gouveia starts dropping bombs, has Reljic on the fence. Reljic manages to tie up Gouveia and struggles for breaths. Reljic looks a little stunned, Gouveia is trying to find some room to punch, eventually gets some room but Reljic pushes him off and both fighters stand back up at 2:15. Reljic with a big left kick to Gouveia's temple, and immediately gets on top, throwing lefts and rights, Gouveia is blocking them at first, but he can't block them fast enough, and the fight is stopped. WINNER: Goran Reljic, 3:15 of Round 2 by TKO.

Christian Wellisch (230, 8-4-0) vs. Shane Carwin (252, 9-0-0)

Okay, so this one IS going to make the PPV after all, and it really did happen about as quick as Lady J reported it. They circle the ring a few times and trade a few punches, Carwin starts to get aggressive with his offense, and then Carwin with a solid right hand that rocks Wellisch, right on the button. WINNER: Shane Carwin, 0:44 of Round 1 by TKO.

Wanderlei Silva (205, 31-8-1) vs. Keith Jardine (205, 13-4-1)

Fans are equally behind both of these men, both look equally intense as they go to the middle of the ring for referee instructions, Steve Mazzagatti is that referee. Jardine starts with a few hands, but Silva moves in, rocks Jardine with a right to the dome, IMMEDIATELY and throws lefts and rights. Jardine starts to fight, but Silva with a solid punch square on the jaw, Jardine is OUT and cannot defend himself, FIGHT IS STOPPED! WINNER: Wanderlei Silva, 0:36 of Round 1 by KO.

Silva comes back with a huge win. Silva immediately thanks the fans for showing up. Silva talks us through the last several seconds They're just now pulling up Jardine, and he walks over and hugs Silva on the way out.

Ivan Salaverry (185, 12-5-1) vs. Rousimar Palhares (185, 16-1)

Mario Yamasaki is our official for this preliminary fight from earlier tonight. Salavary with an opening high kick, Palhares shoots in and takes side control. Salavery puts up the legs to block Palhares, but Palhares takes mount and locks the legs underneath, and turns it into back control. Salaverry is tucking his chin in to block the submission, Palhares is looking for an opening anywhere. Salaverry is bridging trying to break the hold, tries to roll out, but Palhares finds the free arm on the way out, Salaverry taps! WINNER: Rousimar Palhares, 2:36 of Round 1 by submission.

UFC Lightweight Championship:
champion B.J. Penn (155, 13-4-1) vs. Sean Sherk (155, 36-2-1)

Results of the night's mobile voting show the fans think Penn will come out on top, 55%-45%. We go into a video package detailing how Sherk lost his belt, and Penn won his belt, and how Penn essentially laid the challenge for Sherk's return. Sherk enters the ring first after his pre-fight check, picks up some boos from a contengent of fans. Bruce Buffer with the final introductions of the night, Mario Yamasaki will be the referee for our main event.

Penn immediately with a jab, Sherk grabs a leg, Penn escape, Sherk with a kick, goes in for some punches, Penn stands his ground. Fans start chanting loudly for Penn, Sherk keeps swinging away but isn't connecting. Sherk with a shot to Penn that rocks him for just a second, but Penn quickly recovers. Sherk is looking more aggressive than Penn, but Penn is defending himself well. Sherk moves in and gets an elbow in, Penn pushes him off, Sherk continues to press the offensive with jabs and punches. Penn starts to pick up his offense with some quick jabs, Sherk moves in, Penn can hit a few knees to the middle before they seperate back up. Both men have traded jabs for most of the round, Sherk with a few good knees with 0:38 left, Penn responds with a few knees of his own. They go back to trading jabs to end Round 1.

Round 2 starts with Sherk holding the center of the ring, aggresive with the jabs and kicks. Penn is patiently waiting him out, then closes in with several uppercuts and jabs, Sherk responds with a leg kick. Sherk goes in to strike, Penn tries to grab hiim, Sherk escapes. They continue to dance around, throwing some punches. Penn with an uppercut at 2:48, Sherk not phased, still countering, each man still toe-to-toe. Sherk is starting to miss more punches than he's landing, Penn is starting to connect with more punches, 1:00 to go. Sherk is bleeding badly now in three places. Penn with a right kick to the leg, goes for a knee, Sherk grabs it for a takedown, Penn shrugs it off. Sherk with some wild swings as we end Round 2. Pen is getting cleaned up, he has two large cuts, one under each eye, and one on his cheek.

Both men continue exchanging punches for the start of Round 3, this has been entirely a standup game to this point. Sherk is finding some good connecting punches to Penn's head, but Penn isn't showing any pain yet. Penn takes his turn in connecting with some punches, shoots in, Sherk backs up, defends Penn off until they're both back to the center of the ring. Penn with some more aggressive punches, Sherk widly swings back in defense, Penn backs off. Penn with a solid right kick, starts taunting Sherk a little. Mike Goldberg questions whether Sherk has injured his right hand, resorting in more kicks. 0:45 left in the round, Sherk is pulling back on the righs and following with the leg kicks. Penn goes in for a knee strike with 0:10 left, rocks Sherk, he's on the cage! Penn with the fists! The horn goes off.

BJ Penn immediately jumps off and starts waving his hands, declaring the fight is over, he's won. Sherk says it isn't over, but the referee says it is! WINNER: BJ Penn, 5:00 of Round 3 by TKO.

Sherk struggles to get up, apparently the knee to the head did legitimately rock him. After a minute, Penn comes over and Sherk welcomes him with open arms. At least for now, it looks like their feuding is done. My PPV cuts out, so I have no idea what happened after this. That's it for the main show, but they're going to show the rest of the preliminary fights.

Jon Koppenhaver (170, 6-1) vs. Yoshiyuki Yoshida (170, 10-2)

We're back just in time for the start of this preliminary fight from earlier tonight. They start with the jabs, but Yoshida with a judo toss, locks in a guillotine, pulls Koppenhaver in with a gator roll, and finishes him off with a anaconda choke. WINNER: Yoshiyuki Yoshida, 0:56 of Round 1 by submission.

Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou (204, 4-2-0) vs. Kazuhiro Nakamura (206, 11-7-0)

Sokoudjou with some early offensive, lots of kicks, but Nakamura catches one of them and fends him off. Sokoudjou still going with the kicks but not getting far, Nakamura evading easily. nakamura with a flying knee at 2:40 left in the match, followed by a nice right. Sokoudjou sits back for awhile, but starts to get more aggressive with the kicks again with 1:30 left in the round, but then backs off of it. Nakamura starts to step up his offense again, but Sokoudjou isn't taking that, moves in and knocks Nakamura down, Sokoudjou starts with the pounding right as the horn sounds, ending Round 1. Nokamura looks ike his right knee is tweaked, his handlers sit him down, and then call off the fight. WINNER: Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou, 3:00 of Round 1 by TKO.

"Submission of the Night" goes to Rousimar Palhares's armbar submission on Ivan Salaverry. Apparently BJ Penn has called out Georges St. Pierre for his next fight. UFC returns on Sunday, June 7th for UFC 85: Bedlam from the O2 Arena in London, England, 3pm ET. We'll see you then!
