UFC 87: Seek & Destroy PPV Results

Unfortunately Lady J couldn't complete the preliminary fight updates because there was no free wi-fi available inside the Target Center - which really sucks. Thankfully, Killa Kev is in the house to provide you with tonight's UFC Results! So, in the chatroom this week, you people had BETTER love me! I don't want to hear "Killa Kev Sucks" because if I hear one more "Killa Kev Sucks" chants, I'm going to take this PPV recap and LEAVE!

Anyhow, Lady J just sent me the results by text message for the prelims (BTW, Mike Coughlin, if you are readying sir, Lady J kindly thanks you once again for making things happen!)

I'm flying blind on this show because honestly I'm supposed to be asleep right now, I have to be up for work in 7 hours and I've only had 90 minutes of sleep today! But stick with me and I'll do the best I can to recap. I missed the preliminary coverage and all that other stuff, Bruce Buffer is giving the introductions for the first fight:

Demian Maia (8-0, 185 lbs) vs. Jason MacDonald (21-9, 185 lbs)

McDonald gets the clear pop from the Minneapolis crowd, and Lady J notes there's a lot of Canadians in the crowd. Yves Lavigne is our referee and we're underway! Maia tries for an inside leg kick, and a couple of high kicks to the head, MacDonald moves in for the clutch and puts Maia on the mat, Maia goes into full guard. MacDonald with some side punches, Maia is trying for a triangle and he just about has it, LOCKED IN 3:36 in the match! MacDonald is fighting to break it, hanging ough, Maia is dropping elbows on MacDonald's head, MacDonald is on his feet HE IS OUT! MacDonald with a choke on Maia's back! REAR NAKED CHOKE! Maia rolls out of it after almost 30 seconds, Maia is in half guard, now into full guard. Maia is trying for the triangle again, but best he can get is a body scissor. MacDonald with s shoulder to Maia's head. MacDonald is trying to dominate, trying to pass guard, but eventually stands up and rains down some fists. Maia tries to shoot for the legs, MacDonald with a guillotine choke, sitting right on top of Maia. Maia rolls him over and puts MacDonald on his back, but the guillotine is still in with one minute left in the round, Maia is bleeding, Maia escapes, takes MacDonald's back, with his his own rear naked choke! 21 seconds, MacDonald looks like he's fading. 10... 9... Maia has it in, Maia releases it five seconds before the horn, MacDonald gets lucky!

Round two starts with a slugfest, MacDonald shoves Maia into the cage and shoots for the legs. Maia takes MacDonald to the ground, MacDonald is in guard, trying to roll off his back. Maia is landing lots of good punches to the head, MacDonald is intelligently defending himself, but Maia is getting some elbows to the face now, 3 minutes left in the round. It's all ground and pound here right now, no finesse. You can see MacDonald is cut open on the bridge of his nose, he's trying to protect it while fighting back, Maia still maintaining top position. MacDonald is scooting all over the ring to defend himself and avoid Maia's punches, Lavigne is letting them sit it out. MacDonald wraps his arms around Maia's body, but Maia escapes it, MacDonald has his legs wrapped around Maia's right leg with 50 seconds left in the round. MacDonald pops out, Maia tries for an armbar, MacDonald gets the dominant position though, trying to pass guard, the horn sounds and we're going to round three!

MacDonald goes for a takedown on Maia, we're back on the ground again to start round three. They scoot close to the cage, MacDonald is getting in some good punches, Maia tries to roll, MacDonald takes his back and goes for the rear naked choke, Maia rolls over, MacDonald maintains the top. Maia flips it over and gets side control with 3:00 left in this bout. Both men are starting to look gassed. MacDonald rolls over, Maia takes his back and delivers some crossface punches. Maia goes for the choke, 2:15 left in the fight and MacDonald taps out! Lavigne checks on MacDonald, Maia and MacDonald sit up and bump fists.

WINNER: Damian Maia, 2:45 of Round Three by Tapout (Rear Naked Choke). Maia remains undefeated, he thanks the crowd for their support. We see the arrival of Georges St-Pierre earlier in the evening, as well as the arrival of Jon Fitch. We then run a promo for Chuck Liddell vs. "Sugar" Rashad Evans for UFC 88, which will also have Rich Franklin vs. Matt Hamill. Mike Goldberg says that we're sold out as we go to the promos for Huerta vs. Florian.

Roger Huerta (22-1-1 , 155 lbs) vs. Kenny Florian (11-3, 155 lbs)

Florian gets booed out of the arena while Huerta draws the hometown pop, Dan Miragolita is our referee in charge this evening. Minnesota Vikings defensive end Jarred Allen is spotted in the crowd.

Huerta starts with an inside kick, Florian tries for his own, Huerta fakes a kick, then connects with one, tries for a knee strike that Florian sidesteps. Kicks given and kicks received, both try for a kneestrike and meet knees, but back right off. Huerta with a leg kick, Florian grabs it and drives Huerta to the ground, the side of the cage. Florian with a VICIOUS elbow to Huerta's head, Huerta moves into guard, tries to roll around, Florian takes his back and flattens Huerta out, Florian delivers cross-face punches and body shots from the back with 2:50 left int he round. Huerta struggls to his feet and ges it there, action moves back to the middle of the ring. Fans are chanting "HUER-TA! HUER-TA!". Huerta tries to rush Florian with some punches, but Floria ducks them. Florian fakes the Superman punch, tries for a kick that Huerta sidesteps. Florian charges in again, Huerta fends him off with some punches, but Florian with the clench and they go to the cage. Florian ends up on the side of the cage, Huerta with some short elbows and punches, Florian backs out and escapes. Huerta attempts a knee strike, Florian tries to clench, Huerta puts him on the cage, Florian escapes with some knees to the head. 39 seconds left in Round One, they're trading punches, nothing really connecting very hard. Huerta with a few inside leg kicks, tries for a Superman punch, Florian backs away to avoid it, horn sounds and we're done with Round One.

Round Two starts with Florian taking his coach's advice and be a little more aggressive. The fans are chanting for Huerta again as he tries some kicks, fakes the Superman punch, puts Florian in the corner, Kenflo tries for a guillotine choke, Huerta takes to his knees, tries to take Florian down, Florian just steps over him and re-assumes his position, 3:45 left in the round. Huerta with a missed kick to the face, Florian sidesteps the Superman punch, then uses his own and tries to rush Huerta on the cage, Huerta wraps up his left arm and tries for a kimora. Florian is on his knee, Huerta lays in punches to the head, Florian takes Huerta down and moves into side control, then mounts his back, gets Huerta flattened out, pig cross-face punches, Huerta pops out as Florian goes too high on the back, and they're on their feet again, much to the fans' delight. Florian with an inside leg kick, 2:06 left in the round. Florian with a kick that trips up Huerta, but Huerta pops back up quickly. Florian with the fake Superman punch, tries to follow with another, but Florian counters with a high kick to the head, Huerta blocks it. Huerta with a kick to the thigh, then wraps up Florian on the cage, Florian tries to throw him, but it only gives Huerta better access to punches. Florian with the Muay Thai clench, Huerta escapes with some elbows to the face, 20 seconds left in the round. We're back to stand-up fighting, they trade some punches as we end Round Two, Huerta gets in a body kick right as the horn sounds.

Round Three, both men come out and tap gloves, Florian then kicks Huerta in the face, double leg takedown, guillotine! Huerta escapes, Florian with a knee, a flying knee, Huerta with a legkick, Florian catches it, Huerta with a knee to the head, Florian no-sells it! Huerta tries again, Florian grabs the leg, puts Huerta in a kneebar, but lets it go to take top position! Florian trying to find a place to land elbows, Huerta blocks them all successfully. Huerta tries to get to his feet and does, Florian gave him a front facelock for his trouble though. Huerta with clench, puts Florian on the cage, but Florian wiggles out. They trade some punches, 3:00 left in the fight. Florian with a big knee to Huerta's chin, kick to the side of the head that goes unblocked, but Huerta isn't fazed. Florian JUST misses an elbow shot, Huerta just barely ducks it. Huerta with a big kick, Florian moves out of the way to avoid another attack. Florian with a kick, Huerta swats it away from his head. 1:49 left in the fight, Florian with an inside leg kick, Huerta responds with some swings. They're trading some nice punches, 1:17 left in the fight, Huerta with a open jab to Florian's Jaw, Florian with a kneestrike to the head, Huerta responds with his own kneestrike! 50 seconds left int he match, Florian with a high kick that sails over Huerta's head, but he connects with another. Huerta tries for a high kick to the head, but he slips, Florian lets him up. Florian charges in, double leg takedown, Huerta on the cage, Florian with some big punches, but Huerta gets to his feet, Florian with the clench, kneestrikes, jab by Florian, a second, TIME! We're going to the scorecards for this one as the two men hug each other in the ring.

WINNER: Bruce Buffer says the judges score it 30-27 unanimous decision... KENNY FLORIAN! Both men hug each other. Florian says that he didn't want to get into a brawl with Huerta, his patience paid off. He gives Huerta a lot of credit for being able to avoid the finish. Joe Rogan asks what's next for Florian, he says he's unsure, but he's got a lot of project coming up, including opening a new training academy with his brother. He thanks the fans for their support.

Manvel Gamburyan (10-3, 155 lbs) vs. Rob Emerson (9-6-1, 155 lbs)

Yves Lavigne is the referee in charge as these Ultimate Fighters Season 5 competitors re-unite. Emerson puts Gamburyan on his ass IMMEDIATELY, THAT'S IT! Gamburyan tried to come out with some wild swings and Emerson just rocked him with a right and then a left hook.

WINNER: Rob Emerson, 0:12 of Round 1 by Knockout. Our competitors hugged, Rogan asks Emerson if he anticipated this, Emerson said he didn't know what was going to happen, he thought Gamburyan was going to be more careful. On the replay we see Emerson catches Gamburyan's open chin with a right hook, then connects with a knee to the face on the way down, and then finished with the left hook. Emerson says that Gamburyan is going to do big things in MMA, he's happy with the win though.

Cheick Kongo (21-4-1, 235 lbs) vs. Dan Evensen (10-2, 244 lbs)

Well since we got some minutes to fill, we'll go to one of the preliminary bouts from earlier in the evening. Yves Lavigne the senior referee for this match as we get underway. Evenson takes the middle of the ring to start the match, but Kongo is NOT showing even a hint of fear, sending out some jabs just to send a message. Evenson tries to rush Kongo, but he puts Evenson on the cage. Lavigne warns them at the 4:00 mark to start working. Kongo slams Evenson on the mat, Evenson goes into full guard. Kongo grabs Evenson by a foot, pulls him out of the cage and lays in some kicks, tries for the axekick, Evenson just barel blocks it. Lavigne finally breaks and stands them up at 3:00 left. Evenson tries to slug, Kongo side-steps it and clenches Evenson on the cage. Evenson tries for a waistlock, but Kongo doesn't let him do anything. Evenson gets an arm around Kongo's neck, tries for a guillotine, but can't lock his hands in, Kongo AGAIN leaves the head open, Evenson this time gets the guillotine locked in, 1:45 left int he round, Kongo with enough punches to the ribs to break it. Kongo starts using th eknees as he leans into Evenson on the cage. Evenson tries to knee his way out, Kongo grabs the right leg, tries to slam Evenson but Evenson protects himself. Still, Kongo is on top and is raigning down a few fists with 0:55 left in the round, Evenson is on his side as Kongo stands up and kicks him a few times, Lavigne stands them up 0:30 left in the round. Evenson tries a wild kick, Kongo ducks it, connects a few leg kicks, hits Evenson on the chin with 12 second left, Kongo is on Evenson like stink on shit, Lavigne steps in at 0:05 left to stp the fight!

WINNER: Cheick Kongo, 4:56 of Round 1 by TKO (repeated unanswered strikes). Replay shows a nice right jab is what really did Evenson in, he's being attended to on the mat as Buffer announces Kongo the winner. Roegan asks Kongo what he wants to do in the heavyweight division, Kongo says that he doesn't really care, but he'd really like to get a title fight, but he is jus waiting his time, he knows he's the best fighter in the world. Roegan wants Kongo to do the fight replay with him, but Kongo just walks off. LOL, freakin' great knockout.

Heath Herring (28-13-1 250 lbs) vs. Brock Lesnar (1-1, 265 lbs)

Lesnar once again gets the hometown pop of the night. Mike Goldberg runs down all of Lesnar's accomplishments, except his association with professional wrestling. Joe Roegan finally brings up the fact that Lesnar made his name in pro wrestling, but is now fighting at the highest of all professional sports. Speaking of which, you know that Heath Herring knows how to heel - living up to his "Crazy Horse" moniker, enters to wild west music, a leather cowduster and a 10 gallon Resistol hat. This is our co-main event of the evening, Lesnar's introduction is practically drowned out by the cheers! Likewise, the boos nearly drown out Herring's introduction. Dan Margliata almost pokes Herring's eye out trying to get them in the middle for introductions.

Lesnar out of the corner with a flying knee, Herring side-steps it, Lesnar nails Herring right on the chin, Herring rolls backwards but is back up on his feet, but Lesnar is RIGHT THERE and locks in a guillotine choke! 4:30 left in this round, he's got that choke locked in TIGHT, Herring tries to punch out, knee his way out, Lesnar isn't even grimacing at the punches. Herring's bleeding somewhere, but we can see the blood. Lesnar releases the choke to try to get some punches in, Herring wiggles out, Lesnar with a single-leg takedown, Herring's on the cage. Lesnar on his feet, Herring's bleeding out his left eye. Lesnar gets back on top of Herring, who just gave up his back! Herring with cross-face punches, and Lesnar has a 15 pound advantage on Herring. Herring tries to escape, Lesnar keeps him locked up at 2:30 left in the round. Joe Rogan mentions that Lesnar is the first UFC fighter to wear XXL sized gloves, custom made. Herring keeps trying to escape, and Lesnar just keeps him right where he's at, Herring actually bitches to the referee about it, Lesnar with a pair of knees in Herring's side for his troubles. Lesnar is looking VERY cool and in control this time. 1:20 left in the round, Lesnar is staying on Herring's back. Lady J suggest that Lesnar better be careful not to gas himself out, Joe Rogan just agreed, but says Lesnar is being very methodical, 15 seconds left in the round, nothing has changed except the crowd is chanting "LESNAR! LESNAR! LESNAR!" Lesnar puts in some extra knees to the ribs as Round One ends. Herring's face looks a MESS! We recap the right hand that put Herring on his ass the opening of the match, with Lesnar immediately bumrushing Herring before he can get on his feet.

Rount Two starts, Lesnar with a left jab, a right jab, goes for the double leg takedown but Herring blocks it this time. Lesnar with a right legkick, gets blocked. Goldberg notes that when Lesnar throws the kicks, he's dropping his hands. Lesnar charges Herring and puts him back on the mat, gets Herring's back, Herring is rolling around, Lesnar gets side control. Herring is trying to curl up and escape, but Lesnar keeps working, he passes guard, mounts, goes to the back again. Herring is trying to roll over to get back in guard, Lesnar is blocking all attempts, 2:25 left in the round. Herring's left eye is looking swollen as Lesnar throws knees into his back, ribs, kidneys. Herring finally gets some side control, then gets to his feet with 1:00 in the round. Lesnar tries for a guillotine choke on the cage, but Herring wiggles out, trying some punches, finding his way out, but looking very gassed. Lesnar with a big set of knees to the midsection, Herring slumps a little but then jerks right back up. 25 seconds left, Herring puts Lesnar on the cage, but Lesnar is controlling Herring's arms. Herring gets in a few knee shots, Herring is free, slugs, but Lesnar takes him back down just before the horn sounds, round two is over!

Round Three, Herring comes out with a big kick, Lesnar with a right jab, Herring rushes Lesnar and puts him on the cage again, they're trading body shots, Lesnar turns it around and delivers knees to the chest, Herring is trading back. Lesnar throws Herring back on the ground, he's not going for the knockout but he is on his way to a solid and convincing win. Lesnar with big knees to the back. Goldberg and Rogan are discussing if Lesnar is hurting himself by not going for a big finish, Rogan notes that some guys prefer to forsake the big finish with good ol' ground and pound, and as long as Lesnar can continue to dominate guys like Herring using the GNP, he'll be fine. 2:45 left in the match, Lesnar is not letting up, just methodically and patiently working Herring over. Herring is pretty much curled up at this point, Lesnar could care less, sits Herring up, tries for a rear naked choke, but Herring gets to his feet and tries to slug it out, Lesnar with a waistlock takedown much to the delight of the fans. 1:25 left in the fight, Lesnar gets an arm around Herring's face while pounding Herring's ribs in, they're on the side of the cage. Lesnar has a back mount but isn't locking anything up, just controlling position. Herring rolls over onto his back, Lesnar cinches him back up, 40 seconds left. They're warned to advance their position, I doubt they'll get stood up though. Herring tries to escape one more time, Lesnar with full mount, Herring rolls back over, Lesnar raises his arms in victory before the horn sounds! Cocky! Lesnar celebrates in the middle of the ring as Herring sulks off to his corner, a humbled man. Lady J predicts a unanimous 30-26 victory for Lesnar.

WINNER: Unanimous Decision, 30-26 for Brock Lesnar. Lady J is right! Rogan tries for the interview, Lesnar ignores him and shouts "CAN YOU SEE ME NOW!?" Lesnar went on, "I fell off the horse with Frank Mir, but tonight I got on that stallion and rode it!" Lesnar gets the crowd worked up, poses for some photos at ringside and leaves.

UFC Welterweight Championship:
Champion Georges St-Pierre (16-2, 170 lbs) vs. Jon Fitch (17-2, 170 lbs)

St-Pierre with the last hometown pop, being from nearby Quebec with TONS of Canadians in the crowd. St-Pierre with the immediate takedown. Fitch is controlling the hands, preventing him from landing shots. St-Pierre finally gets a few elbows in at 3:40, moves into half guard. Fitch tries to get to his feet, St-Pierre with a front facelock, grabs a leg and puts Fitch on his back again. Fitch tries to get up, St-Pierre back to the front facelock, but lets Fitch stand up. 2:37 St-Pierre gets off a right after a legkick from Fitch, St-Pierre with BIG SHOTS and staying on Fitch, not letting up! Fitch isn't rocked though, he's defending, under two minutes in the round now, back into half guard. Fitch is bleeding, looks like from the right eye. Fitch is trying to scramble to his feet, St-Pierre is just dropping punches. Fitch pops up but he looks wobbily. He goes down to a knee as St-Pierre slugs it out, 60 seconds in the round, Fitch goes back to full guard, St-Pierre drops elbows on the face, Fitch is a bloody mess already! St-Pierre passes Fitch's guard, first time that's EVER happened to Fitch in UFC competition. 10 seconds, Fitch tries to escape, St-Pierre stops him but the horn sounds, end of Round One! St-Pierre dominates, judges score it 10-8 all for him.

Round Two, we're back to stand up fighting for the opening, moving around, St-Pierre with a nice kick that connects, 4:15 left in the round. St-Pierre with a high kick to the head that just grazes Fitch. The fans are fighting between "U-S-A! U-S-A!" and "G-S-P! G-S-P!" chants, LOL. 2:55 left int he match, nothing really happening but jabs and missed punches, occasional kicks. St-Pierre tries for a clinch, Fitch with some knees to break it. St-Pierre with a spinning back kick that misses, 2:10 left in the round. Fitch is holding his own against the champ, they're trading jabs and punches, 1:30 left in the round. St-Pierre tries for a shoot with 39 seconds left, but Fitch blocks it successfully. Fitch gets a little more aggressive, tries to put together some combos, bu St-Pierre blocks most of them. St-Pierre with some kicks and spinning back kicks as Round Two ends. I'm going to guess that this round goes to Fitch. No, the judges give it unanimous 10-9 to St. Pierre.

Round Three sees St Pierre throw a right at 4:45 and rocks Fitch, he goes down, St. Pierre on the attack, is on Fitch's back, Fitch is busted open in the right eye again! GSP going for the guillotine, but Fitch rolls over and Fitch is on top, 4:04 left in the round! Fitch is swinging and landing almost all his punches, St. Pierre is trying to block or find a hold to grab onto. St. Pierre in rubber guard, tries for the fence, he's warned to let go of it. 3:00 left in the round, Finch tries for a sweep, loses it, GSP is now on top! Fitch is scrambling to his feet, St. Pierre with the front facelock, knees to the head, Fitch is able to elbow back though. They're back to their feet, Fitch tries a kick to the head, just misses. Fitch is bleeding pretty good, under 2 minutes on this round now. St. Pierre with a low legkick, Fitch connects with a left jab. St. Pierre with a high kick and a low kick combo, doesn't do much. Fitch tries for a kick to the head, St. Pierre grabs the leg and puts him on the cage, knees to the thighs, referee warns them to move and St. Pierre backs up. They trade punches, 55 seconds, St. Pierre with a knee, a headkick, a knee and Fitch goes down, he's looking wobbly! Fitch back to his feet, 33 seconds, he's on the fences, St. Pierre is looking for good shots, gets a left, a right, single leg takedown 15 seconds in the round, allowing Fitch to get some elbows in before the horn sounds. Judges score it 10-8, 10-9, 10-8 for St. Pierre.

Round Four and we're still going for stand up fighting, Fitch with a nice high kick that St. Pierre sidesteps, 4:05 left in the round. Fitch with a body kick, 3:35 left in the round. Fitch tries to shoot for a double-leg takedown, gets stuffed. They're just circling the ring mainly and throwing some punches, not much connecting, nobody is looking hurt, although Fitch is bleeding from the left eye. Fitch with a single leg takedown attempt, 1:40, but St. Pierre keeps on his feet, hopping on one leg until he's backed into a corner, Fitch doesn't leg it go, they wrestle around on the cage. Fitch goes to his knees but is hanging onto the leg still, Fitch does down with him, finally gets Fitch on his back with 44 seconds in the round. St. Pierre will win this contest by decision if Fitch doesn't do something soon, The round ends with St. Pierre going for a kneebar but Fitch escaping it just before the horn.  Unanimous 10-9 for St. Pierre by the judges.

Round Five, Fitch has to make something  happen, tries for a headkick, St. Pierre ducks it. St. Pierre with a few leg kick and punch combos that connect.  St. Pierre with a spinning backfist, 4:05 that rocks Fitch, but he smiles. He doesn't smile so much when St. Pierre takes him down! 3:45 left in the contest, GSP clears Fitch's guard again. St. Pierre is in complete control, Fitch tries to roll out but he's looking pretty beat now. 1:45 left and we're back to standup, Fitch is looking pretty bloody, Fitch is just trying to hang on here, maybe escape. 30 seconds, St. Pierre with a front facelock again, pounding knees in Fitch's body. The clock winds down, St. Pierre will walk out the champion. Both men get up after the horn sounds, meet in the middle of the ring and hug each other on their knees. Unanimous 10-9

WINNER:  50-43, 50-44, 50-44 unanimous decision for Georges St. Pierre, the champ retains! St. Pierre said before the fight that Fitch would be his toughest opponent ever, and he still stands by that assessment. Asked about his future in the welterweight division, St. Pierre says he's just ready to fight everybody, all comers, wherever. BJ Pen gets in the ring, says "Let's hook this up! Let's put that fight together!" St. Pierre shakes Penn's hand and says he'll take that fight, any fight, he's not a chicken and wants to prove himself.
