Mike Poulin's IWA Mid South Payback Pain & Agony 2007 Review

Match 1

Six Way Match

Spyder Nate Webb vs Jack Thriller vs Ricochet vs OMG vs Zack McGuire vs Marcus O'Neil

Spyder Nate Webb gets a nice pop from the pseudo hometown crowd in Plainfield IN as we start the show. Ricochet and McGuire lock up. McGuire forces Ricochet in to the ropes and does a quick arm drag and then Ricochet goes off the ropes and McGuire leaps over but Ricochet dives through the legs of McGuire and lands a quick arm drag but McGuire comes back and lands a big dropkick. OMG comes in but McGuire lands a big dropkick on Ricochet who makes the tag out. McGuire lands a few shots but is quickly eliminated by Marcus O'Neal who lands a big faceplant slam to score the first elimination. Thriller comes in and ambushes O'Neal from behind and lands a big running knee to the face. Thriller sends O'Neal in to the ropes but O'Neal holds on and back drops Thriller over the ropes and he catches himself on the apron but is yanked off by OMG and we get a series of dives as O'Neal lands a big dive followed by a moonsault dive from Ricochet followed by a flip dive from Spyder Nate Webb taking out everybody off the ropes. Spyder Nate is able to score our next elimination with a Razor's Edge in to a Diamond Cutter and eliminates OMG which apparently stands for Orange Mustard Goodness UM OKAY that's a fucking whacky name even for the indies.

Thriller comes in and goes after O'Neal and even lands a big German Suplex but O'Neal is able to catch a charging Thriller with a series of boots to the head and land a big top rope frankensteiner and eliminates Thriller. Ricochet lands a series of kicks to the leg and whips O'Neal in to the ropes and lands a big dropkick and then whips O'Neal in to the corner and lands a step up enzuguiri to the back of the head of Ricochet for a near fall. Spyder Nate gets the tag in and lands a vicious clothesline on O'Neal and then proceeds to give hem CPR. Spyder Nate waistlocks O'Neal but O'Neal low blows him and then lands a basement dropkick on Spyder Nate and then takes a cheap shot at Ricochet which is for some reason deemed a tag. Ricochet lands a lionsault on Spyder Nate but Nate somehow is able to lock in a wacky submission hold but Ricochet escapes. Spyder Nate gets Ricochet in to a big torture rack and tags to O'Neal who lands a big top rope elbow and goes for the cocky cover and is quickly rolled up and eliminated by Ricochet.

Spyder Nate locks in a wacky inverted surfboard on Ricochet is able to escape. Spyder Nate props Ricochet on the ropes and goes for a frankensteiner but Ricochet is able to counter and nearly crotches himself on the ropes but gets his balance and lands a beautiful Shooting Star Press and scores the big win

Winner: Ricochet. Good opening match although for a lightweight match it was very short and didn't have a lot of flippy spots involved but the crowd was in to it and in the end Ricochet gets the big win.

Match 2

CJ Otis vs Vortekz

Story for this match is essentially the situation between Drake Younger and CJ Otis that has unfolded in recent shows at this point and of course Vortekz is a good friend apparently of Younger. Otis and Vortekz lock up and trade arm wrenches. Otis gets the advantage and locks in a side headlock and Vortekz shoots him off but Otis lands a big shoulder tackle. Vortekz comes back and lands a series of arm drags and bars the arm. Otis and Vortekz trade forearms but Otis gets the advantage and lands a big double Ax Handle to the back of the head. Otis goes for another Irish Whip and Vortekz tries to counter but Otis counters him and lands a big belly to belly suplex and locks in a chinlock. Otis sends Vortekz in to the ropes and lands a big clothesline and then lands a nice suplex/neckbreaker combination on Vortkez. Otis and Vortekz trade forearms again and this time it's Vortekz firing up and landing a big brainbuster on Otis. Otis and Vortekz continue to trade forearms and then Vortekz catches Otis with a drop toehold in to the middle turnbuckle and lands a big series of kicks to the head followed by a springboard moonsault for a near fall. Otis goes for the Burning Hammer on Vortekz but Vortekz escapes and goes for a Death Valley Driver but can't hold up Otis. Finish sees Vortekz miss a frog splash and Otis lock in the Kokina Clutch for the win.

Winner: CJ Otis.

Mitch Ryder comes out and snatches the microphone from ring announcer Joey Eastman. Ryder the superstar has arrived and he is here by the personal request of The Wild Eyed Southern Boy Tracy Smothers. Ryder says that he and Smothers share the same disrespect for the flippy guys that the IWA Mid South fans cheer for and makes an open challenge to anyone in the back.

Match 3

Mitch Ryder vs Billy Roc vs Jimmy Shalwin

Ryder goes right after Roc with a knee to the gut and a series of forearms to the back and chokes him over the ropes. Roc fires back and lands a big spin kick but Ryder quickly fires back with a clothesline and lands a big shot to the back and gets the microphone and demands another opponent which brings out Jimmy Shalwin. Shalwin gets the microphone and he's here to kick Mitch Ryder's ass. Ryder shoves Shalwin who then shoves Ryder in to a roll up from Billy Roc which scores a near fall. Ryder does a fairly decent job fighting both guys off but ends up on the receiving end of a big double clothesline sending him to the floor. Shalwin catches Roc and lands a big chokeslam. Shalwin climbs the ropes but misses a big moonsault and Roc lands a Standing Sliced Bread 2 and scores the win.

Winner: Billy Roc. Wow talk about a filler match there was nothing accomplished no storyline furthered and no real reason for this match to take place the way it did.

Match 4

Colt Cabana vs Jimmy Jacobs

It's time for a special challenge as IWA Mid South owner Jim Fannin has put 2500 dollars of his money for whoever can take out Jimmy Jacobs and that's why we are here right now. Jacobs attacks Cabana before he can get in to the ring landing a dropkick through the ropes and attacks Cabana on the floor and rolls Cabana back in to the ring. Jacobs lands a series of shots and snaps over Cabana and lands a series of punches and chokes Cabana with his own towel and scores a near fall on Cabana. Jacobs double legs Cabana and lands a big double stomp in to an elbow drop. Jacobs drops to the floor and gets a steel chair and goes for the chair shot but Jacobs misses the chair shot and Cabana lands a big shot and sends Jacobs face first in to the chair and sends Jacobs back in to the ring. Cabana whips Jacobs in to the corner and goes for the flying asshole but gets caught with a spear out of the corner. Jim Fannin appears ringside and tells Cabana to hurt Jimmy Jacobs. Cabana lands a series of elbows to the head and a series of clotheslines for a near fall. Cabana lands a big swinging neckbreaker and lands a big suplex for a near fall. Cabana sets up the chair in the ring post and sends Jacobs face first in to the chair wedged in the 2nd turnbuckle. Finish sees Cabana going for a clothesline but Jacobs ducks and low blows Cabana and backslides him for the win.

Winner: Jimmy Jacobs.

Brandon Thomaselli gets the microphone and insults the fans and he Brandon has apparently brought s headgear with him and explains that this is what the people in High School and College wear. Brandon asks Tarek the Great why he's here he's old he's bald he's not as big as Mr Thomaselli here. Brandon says that tonight the New School is going to defeat the Old School. Tarek the Great the microphone and makes fun of the head gear and says that Brandon has a good chance of beating him and making his name off him but it's not going to happen.

After the match Jack Thriller comes to the ring and assaults the knee of Tarek the Great with a steel chair and locks in a Bret Hart-esque figure four around the ring post snapping the ankle of Tarek the Great.

Match 6

Low KI vs Drake Younger

Both KI and Younger get nice ovation from the crowd in Plainfield. KI and Younger lock up, KI forces Younger in to the corner and teases a chop but breaks clean instead. Joey Eastman on commentary calls Low KI one of the classiest athletes in pro wrestling try telling Gabe Sapolsky that and see if he agrees with you. KI and Younger lock up again with Younger gets the advantage and forces KI in the corner but KI locks in an inverted tarantula on Younger. KI takes down Younger with a wristlock and goes in to a nice front facelock which Younger counters who goes in to a hammerlock and in to a pin attempt for a near fall. Younger double legs KI to the mat but KI counters it in to a cross armbreaker but Younger gets to the ropes. More chops and kicks from KI for the next several minutes but then Younger comes back and lands a big spinebuster on KI. Younger ducks a chop and lands a series of forearms but KI fires back with a big powerslam from Younger for a near fall. Younger sends KI in to the corner but KI catches him with a big boot but Younger catches KI with a big capture suplex for a near fall. Younger props KI on the ropes and goes for a back superplex but KI unties Younger's boots and lands an elbow that ties Younger in the ropes and lands the big Ghetto Stomp for the win.

Winner: Low KI. Good Match between these two. Younger got to take a lot of punishment but looked like a bad ass and got to look very strong in this match even in defeat.

Match 7

For the IWA Mid South Title

Chuck Taylor vs Davey Richards

I love the Adventures of Pete and Pete theme song for Chuck Taylor as he comes to the ring and the guy on commentary talks about Taylor's change in attitude. Taylor and Davey lock up and Taylor forces Davey in to the ropes and delivers a slap. Davey forces Chuck in to the corner and Chuck slaps him again but suffers a big chop to the chest as Low KI joins Joey Eastman on commentary. Taylor wrenches the arm of Davey and Davey tries to roll through but Taylor forces him down with a wristlock and continues to wrench the arm but Davey eventually rolls through and bridges up and lands the big kick to the shoulder of Taylor. Taylor wrenches the arm again and goes behind in to the hammerlock but Davey takes Taylor down with a drop toehold and goes for a submission but Taylor gets to the ropes. Taylor and Davey trade shoulder tackles but Taylor is able to take Davey off his feet with a series of arm drags and a big dropkick sending Davey to the floor. Taylor does a dive but Davey rolls back in to the ring but Taylor lands on his feet just to be taken out via a suicide dive to the floor and then puts a garbage can over Taylor's head and lands a kick on Taylor kicking the Garbage can off of Taylor's head. Wow at least there was nothing in the Garbage Can.

Davey dominates Taylor using a series of submissions for the next several minutes. Taylor whips Davey in to the corner but Davey catches him coming in with a back drop but Taylor catches himself on the apron and then catches Davey with a kick to the head followed by a neckbreaker on the ropes to gain the advantage. Taylor does a lot of underhanded tactics including eye and back rakes to keep the advantage but is also able to lock in some good submission holds. Taylor climbs the ropes but Davey catches him with a shot and lands a big superplex for a near fall. Taylor sends Davey in to the corner but gets caught with a big elbow to the face and Davey lands a big Tornado DDT and then hooks the arm in to an arm bar submission but Taylor is able to escape that hold. Taylor goes for the Omega Driver but Davey is able to counter but Davey escapes. Taylor catches Davey with a big belly to belly suplex which Davey no sells but Taylor catches him with a big kick to a near fall. Davey locks in the kimura but Taylor is able to counter in to a pinning combination using the tights and scoring the win Or does he. Low KI gets up from commentary and gets the microphone and says that he knows that he isn't the only one that saw Taylor pull the tights and demands the match be restarted the referee seems to like that idea and restarts Davey wastes no time forcing Taylor in to the corner and landing a big series of Kobashi Chops followed by a handspring kick for a near fall. Davey hooks Taylor and lands a big Saito Suplex followed by a German Suplex for a near fall. Finish sees Taylor getting the referee out of position and hitting a low blow and lands the Omega Driver and scores the fall.

Winner and Still IWA Mid South Heavyweight Champion: Chuck Taylor. Great Match between these two I even enjoyed the little false finish with Taylor using the tights but then Low KI getting the match restarted. Good stuff here.

After the match Taylor continues to beat down Davey but Davey lands the DR Driver. Low KI gets in the ring and grabs the IWA Mid South Title but then basically dumps it on to Taylor. Low KI gets the microphone and says while Taylor won tonight the next time he defends the title he won't because it will be against him.

Main Event

Hardcore Rumble to determine the first IWA Mid South Deathmatch Champion

Ian Rotten vs 2 Tuff Tony vs Mickie Knuckles Diehard Dustin Lee vs Mad Man Pondo vs Drake Younger

It is time for the main event as we get a view of several of the tools or weapons that these wrestlers will use including Barbed Wire Boards, Broken Glass, and many other things this could get ugly and fast. This is basically a 6 person Royal Rumble as we will start with two and every 3 minutes a new person will enter. Ian Rotten and 2 Tuff Tony start us off in this match and within seconds each man attempts to put the other in to the Barbed Wire covered top rope and both men block it. Ian throws Tony to the floor and they go in to the bleachers and Ian goes for a suplex but Tony counters with a suplex of his own through chairs. Tony goes for a chair shot but is met with a testicular claw. Ian and Tony brawl back towards ringside and Ian gets the barbed wire bat and just rakes it across the face of Tony and then hits Tony in the head of Tony and then he gets the barbed wire bat and we finally get are 3rd participant who is Mickie Knuckles. Tony waist for Mickie from behind with a shot to the back with a barbed wire bat and then avoids a charge from Ian who meets the barbed wire. Mickie then whips Ian in to the barbed wire but gets caught with a shot to the head and then gets caught by Ian who lands a big dropkick. Ian and Mickie trade headbutts in a brutal fashion and then Tony goes for the pin on Mickie and Ian stops the cover and the brawl falls back to the floor. Ian hip tosses Tony on to mouse traps and then low blows Mickie and then sticks Mouse Traps to Mickie. Dustin Lee is our third participant in the match and gets taken out by the barbed wire bat wielding Tony and then gets destroyed by both Ian and Mickie as well. Mickie plasters Dustin with a big chair shot and on the other side it's Tony using a barbed wire bat jamming it in to the face of Ian. These 3 minute in between participants take forever but our fifth person is Mad Man Pondo. Pondo rolls Mickie in to the ring and whips her in to the ropes and plasters her with a stop sign.

Everyone is in the ring for a bit with Ian somehow getting dollar bills stapled to his face and Pondo staples the balls of Lee and the brawl continues and our final participant is Drake Younger who is attacked on the floor by everyone. Fighting on the outside as Younger is thrown through chairs by 2 Tuff Tony but the Ian comes from behind and plasters both Tony and Younger with chair shots and then a knee to the back of Mickie. Ian and Mickie trade forearms and stuff while Pondo lands a chair shot on Lee who falls back in to a board filled with thumbtacks on it. Lee is eventually the first man to suffer elimination as he is put through a barbed wire board and pinned by 2 Tuff Tony. This match kind of drags on without commentary. Ian and Mickie trade some sick forearms on the floor but both get in to the ring and then Mickie lands a shining wizard kicking a barbed wire 2 by for in to the face of Pondo and that eliminates him and then moments later it's Tony landing a big Kryptonite Krunch on to a barbed wire board and pins Ian. Drake goes for a German Suplex on Tony but Tony lands a low blow and lands a German Suplex threw glass on Younger and we get the awkward double pin scenario but in the end Tony is eliminated. So our final two in this match are Drake Younger and Mickie Knuckles. Drake and Mickie shake hands and Mickie demands for Drake to hit her. Drake and Mickie trade forearms and shots but Mickie lands a big bodyslam in to a pain of glass for a near fall. Drake and Mickie trade forearm but Mickie fires back and lands knees to the head but in the end it's Drake Younger with a Death Valley Driver in to the pain of glass and scores the pin.

Winner and the IWA Mid South Deathmatch Champion: Drake Younger.

Ian Rotten gets the microphone and bashes Vince McMahon's ECW and saying that Bobby Lashley wouldn't know Hardcore if you showed it to him in a dictionary. Ian says that Hardcore isn't working in front of 20,000 fans it's busting your ass night in and night out. Ian puts over Younger and says that he will be a Motherfucking superstar one day. Ian says that tonight Mickie Knuckles also did something and that's she pinned Mad Man Pondo and says that she is in the King of the Death Match Tournament and says that he showed Mickie sympathy and they have a little argument and then Ian puts over independent Wrestling because all the guys bust their ass from the fans.

Meh not a great show here there were some decent matches I.E KI/Younger and Taylor/Davey but the rest of the card is king of blah and a lot of the matches were rather short and seemed unimportant. We do get the build up for Low KI/Chuck Taylor match. Also the 6 Man Hardcore Rumble seemed to drag. Show wasn't great and it seemed shortened match wise.
