UFC 205: Conor McGregor vs. Eddie Alvarez - Early Odds

There's a huge UFC show coming up this weekend -- perhaps you've heard about it -- it's UFC 205 "Alvarez vs. McGregor" taking place at Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York! Featherweight champion Conor McGregor challenges lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez for his title, and it's the only title on the line. If Conor wins he will be the only fighter Conor McGregorin UFC to be champion in two different weight classes simultaneously! We'll look at the early odds for this historic show below, and the only thing bigger would be the boxing odds if Floyd Mayweather Jr. ever came out of retirement for a rumored cross-promotional fight with McGregor. If he wins on Saturday night that talk will certainly start up again.

Anyway let's skip that kind of boxing vs. MMA speculation for now and stick to what's on tap November 12th at the historic Garden in New York. For UFC's first ever show in the state three world title fights have been lined up on PPV. Strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk is an early favorite to retain at -410 with her challenger Karolina Kowalkiewicz coming in at +330. Given that Jedrzejczyk is undefeated at 12-0 and looked really strong beating Claudia Gadelha in a rematch in July, the only person to ever get a split decision against Joanna Champion (as many fans call her - probably because her last name is confusing to a lot of people), it's no surprise the bookmakers are lining up behind her. Kowalkiewicz is also undefeated but other than Rose Namajunas the level of competition she's faced just doesn't compare.

Welterweight champion Tyron Woodley a/k/a "T-Wood" is a surprising +170 underdog in the early odds going against Stephen "Wonderboy" Thompson at -200. Then again is it really so surprising? Thompson hasn't lost a fight in over four years, the last one being "The Immortal" Matt Brown in April 2012. Since then he's knocked out four of the seven opponents he faced, and in a five round war this June he knocked off former No. 1 contender Rory MacDonald in his last UFC fight. Let's not take Woodley too lightly though, since his only loss in his last six fights is to MacDonald, and he just obliterated the gutsy and popular welterweight champion Robbie Lawler with a stunning first round knockout at UFC 201. Lawler had been to the fifth round in four straight fights before this loss, so maybe he was just physically spent, but then again maybe Woodley hits harder than any of those men.

Last but not least the early odds favor Conor McGregor to knock off Eddie Alvarez and take his lightweight title, but at -160 to +140 that line is likely to change quite a bit between now and Saturday, so I'd be checking in multiple times to see where it is between now and then -- particularly after both fighters weigh in on Friday. If either one looks like they had a bad weight cut this could change dramatically. McGregor is 5'9" with a 74" reach, Alvarez is the same height with a 69" reach, so if McGregor is efficient with his energy (and not chucking cans of Monster Energy) that reach could pay dividends, especially since he's not making a two weight class jump like he did to fight Nate Diaz twice. We shall see.
