IN MEMORY OF JON HUBER a/k/a "LUKE HARPER" - R.I.P. 1979-2020.

...

* Isaiah "Swerve" Scott vs. Bronson Reed

NXT opens with the first match of the night, the returning Reed against a new attitude in Swerve. Reed utilizes his power over the technical technique of Swerve, and after clotheslining him out the ring, he hits a diving shoulder tackle from the apron to the floor. Swerve feigns an injury, only to pop up with a chopblock and hits the House Call. Swerve kicks him from the apron, does the DX crotch chop, covers for 1, stomps and stands on Reed's knee, then hits a diving uppercut to the back. Swerve dropkicks him in the knee, hits the rolling flatliner, gets a near-fall, then goes back to work on the big leg. Reed gets back into it with a sit-down splat on Swerve's chest, a running back elbow, avalanche splash, falling Choke Slam, and gets a near-fall of his own. Swerve gets a sneaky headbutt using the back of his head, Reed gets angry, body attack, senton, and hits the Tsunami for the 3-count! WINNER: BRONSON REED.

Mr. William Regal is backstage to present the award for Breakout Star of the Year and the nominees are Pat McAfee, Damian Priest, Shotzi Blackheart, Cameron Grimes, Dexter Lumis, Timothy Thatcher, Raquel Gonzalez, Santos Escobar, and Ilja Dragunov. The Breakout Star of the Year: SHOTZI BLACKHEART! Shotzi is standing by a bonfire in her yard to thank everyone and says her dad is proud of her.

After our first commercial break we see Leon Ruff had already arrived to the building earlier today. Johnny Gargano and The Way all entered the building as well, and then Johnny spotted a black cat down the hall. Will that be bad luck for Gargano? Is it a sign of things to come tonight?

* Breezango vs. Grizzled Young Veterans

Tyler Breeze and James Drake start the match for their respective teams, and the two showcase their wrestling abililites at the beginning. Fandango tags in, hits a shoulder block, armdrag into an armbar, Drake takes over, Zack Gibson tags in, Fandango gives him a headlock takedown, and these two men show off their skills.

BREAKING NEWS: The Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic returns to NXT in two weeks!

Breeze tags back in, Drake saves his partner in a corner, and Gibson clotheslines Breeze before tagging out. Drake body slams Breeze, gets only a 1-count, and the commentators focus their conversation about the Dusty Tag Team Classic. Breeze lands on his feet to avoid a double team, Fandango gets the hot tag, fights both men, inverted atomic rop and clothesline to Drake, sunset flip to Gibson for 2, and Breeze dropkicks Drake. Breezango both boot Gibson in the head, catapult countered, Gibson pins Breeze for 2, Breeze dropkicks them through the ropes, and Fandango hits a flying crossbody from a high beam! Fandango is holding his knee in pain before a commercial break featuring a promo for NXT Year's Evil next week.

Gibson gets the tag when we come back, the GYV work on Fandango's knee, Gibson slams his knee on the barricade, brings him back into the ring, Fandango tries to fight back but Gibson does a dragon screw from the ropes, and covers three times but can't get the victory. Drake gets the tag but he gets kicked away and crashes into thebarricade, so Gibson brings his partner back in to get the tag. Breeze gets his own hot tag, hits Gibson with a basement dropkick, forearm smashes to both men, jumping enzuigiri to Gibson, Drake tags in, Breeze hits no one as the Grizzled Young Veterans split apart and both smack him in the head with forearm shots. Fandango wipes out Gibson with a cannonball from the apron, Breeze hits Drake with a jumping knee, Gibson pulls Fandango off the apron and shoves him into the steel steps. Drake rolls up Breeze for 2, hard forearm, Gibson tags in, Breeze fights them off again, but they hit Ticket to Mayhem for the win. WINNERS: GRIZZLED YOUNG VETERANS.

Ever-Rise show up on the stage screaming in GYV's direction, but they're held back by one female referee. She yells at them, but tells them to figure their problem out and storms off! Ever-Rise have no excuse now so they just back off, leaving Gibson and Drake confused at their nonsense.

William Regal lists the nominees for Tag Team of the Year: Undisputed Era, Breezango, Imperium, Gallus, Legado Del Fantasma, and Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch. The Tag Team of the Year: UNDISPUTED ERA! All four men of Undisputed Era accept the two awards for the third year in a row. Adam Cole says they show no signs of slowing down, and they make an announcement. Adam Cole and Roderick Strong will represent the team in the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic.

After the break we continue the story of Xia Li and Boa, and they seem to be mastered at the lessons they were taught. The master is told to stand down, as the mystery woman stands up and marks their foreheads. They open the doors and finally leave the "dojo" and will be in the CWC next week.

* Mercedes Martinez vs. Valentina Feroz

Martinez knocks her opponent around, slams her down, chokes her on the middle rope, gets caught in a sleeper, breaks the hold, plants her with a spinebuster, yells at her a little bit, slaps her, delivers an overhead choke toss, and hits the air raid crash for the 3. WINNER: MERCEDES MARTINEZ.

Martinez: "And every woman in this place, you're all on my radar! Click, click!" Speaking of the women in NXT, it's time to find out who is the Female Competitor of the Year. The nominees are: Rhea Ripley, Io Shirai, Candice LeRae, Dakota Kai, Kay Lee Ray, and Tegan Nox. The Female Competitor of the Year: IO SHIRAI! Io Shirai thanks everyone who voted for her, and says this division is so talented. And it's also time to find out the Male Competitor of the Year, and the nominees are: Finn Balor, Adam Cole, Johnny Gargano, Keith Lee, WALTER, and Tommaso Ciampa. The Male Competitor of the Year: ADAM COLE! Regal hands Cole his award, and Cole says he couldn't have done it with the Undisputed Era. He adds that even though it means a lot winning it two years in a row, it'll mean even more when Kyle O'Reilly wins the NXT Title next week. "And THAT is Undisputed."

* Roderick Strong vs. Pete Dunne

The match starts as a fight! Strong just goes on the attack, Dunne fights back, Strong takes him down with a headlock, Dunne leapfrogs, and Strong clotheslines him. Dunne puts him in a headbutt, Strong hits a leg lariat, chops him on the chest, Dunne takes him down with a head scissors and tries joint manipulation on the fingers. Dunne puts him in a double wristlock with a body scissors, Strong counters bouncing him in the ropes, Dunne kicks him up and over to the floor, kicks him in the face, throws him back in, Strong fights back, pulls him into a backbreaker then dropkicks him through the ropes.

We go picture-in-picture, Dunne takes over the control and chokes him over the edge of the ring. Strong chops him again, sets him up on the top, Dunne blocks a superplex, counters with a face-first suplex, and does a jumping double stomp onto Strong's hands. Dunne stomps on his knees, beats him down in a corner, and remains in control.

As we come back Dunne sends him hard into the turnbuckles chest-first, puts him in the Rings of Saturn, but Strong rolls over to release the pressure, Dunne stomps on him, Strong fights back, Irish whip, Dunne backflips over him, and Strong lands a beautiful dropkick. Strong comes back fighting, face-first mat slam, running high knee, running forearm flurry, Angle Slam, and a 2-count. Dunne kicks him off, side-steps a baseball slide, sends him into the steel steps, sets up for the Bitter End, but Strong counters and drops him with a half-nelson slam on the apron. Strong gets a near-fall in the ring, Dunne rolls him up for 2, hits an enzuigiri, Strong hits his own enzuigiri, double underhook, Dunne counters the powerbomb with a triangle choke, but Strong lifts him up into a backbreaker! Strong drapes one arm over for a 2-count, Dunne rolls him up, rolls through to stomp on him, goes back to the triangle choke, Strong battles out and goes for the Stronghold, but Dunne kicks him off, snaps Strong's fingers, plants him with The Bitter End, and gets the 3-count! WINNER: PETE DUNNE!

Time to find out the Match of the Year with the nominees: 4-Way 60-Minute Iron Man Match for the NXT Title from NXT Super Tuesday, Finn Bálor vs. Kyle O'Reilly for the NXT Title from NXT TakeOver 31, WALTER vs. Ilja Dragunov for the NXT UK Title from NXT UK TV, Undisputed Era vs. Team McAfee in the men's War Games match from NXT TakeOver: War Games, and Charlotte Flair vs. Rhea Ripley vs. Io Shirai for the NXT Women's Title from NXT TakeOver: In Your House. The Match of the Year: Finn Bálor vs. Kyle O'Reilly for the NXT Title from NXT TakeOver 31! This now marks each member of U.E. who can hold an NXT Year End award. Regal is ready to present both awards to each man, but Bálor tells him that he doesn't want his. Instead, he wants to give O'Reilly his award himself. Bálor crosses paths with Pete Dunne after his match, Dunne tells him to hold on to his title, and Bálor brushes him off. The champ heads out in the CWC with the NXT Championship in one hand, and the award in the other hand.

We go to a commercial break, and come back with a promo for next week's Fight Pit on NXT New Year's Evil. Timothy Thatcher and Tommaso Ciampa do the narrating, talking about the match. Only Thatcher has been in this environment before, but Ciampa doesn't care since he's the one who made the challenge.

Finn Bálor: "Finn Bálor vs. Kyle O'Reilly, TakeOver 31 for the NXT Championship, Match of the Year! Kyle surprised a lot of people that night, but he didn't surprise me. He proved to everyone that he belongs in the ring with Finn Bálor. So the way I see, Kyle, you deserve this. So I think you should come--" Say no more! Kyle O'Reilly comes out shocking the system, and goes to pick up his award. Bálor tells him that he doesn't need it since he's got the NXT Title in his possession, and adds that that award is only a reminder of the three steel plates in his jaw from that match. O'Reilly understands why it wouldn't mean anything to Bálor, but it means a lot to him proving that he belongs at the top of NXT. Kyle fires up saying that he wants the real prize, the NXT Championship. He says that he will do anything to become the champion, and that title says that after 15 years it means that he will be worth a damn. Bálor tells him he will do everything in his power to make him suffer. "The last time we wrestled, you broke my jaw! So the next time we wrestle, I'm gonna make you pay."

the two go face-to-face, until Scarlett and Karrion Kross show up! Scarlett: "What's in that ring belongs to us. It's irrelevant who leaves with in 7 days, because your fate is already sealed." Kross only adds "Doomsday is here" then turns around to see Damian Priest standing behind him. Priest looks him dead in the eyes and says, "This is how you step like a man." They start fighting on the stage, Kross counters a powerbomb with a ripcord forearm, Priest boots him in the face, then they go tumbling through the plexiglass, and they keep fighting! Kross beats him down on the equipment boxes, Priest uppecuts him, Kross goes for the Doomsday Saito, but Priest reverses, and they go crashing through tables!!

After the break, we get a video package about Rhea Ripley and her budding friendship with Raquel Gonzalez when she first arrived at the Performance Center. They actually have matching "RNR" tattoos! Gonzalez eventually grew spiteful of Ripley's success, and it all went downhill from there. RNR - Rhea & Raquel, next week, Last Woman Standing!

Legado Del Fantasma are standing in the ring all full of smiles, especially the NXT Cruiserweight Champion. Santos Escobar: "You know what? Let's take a moment, look around, see where we are. Enjoy the moment, disfruta tu momento. What a year we had. What a year I had. The NXT Universe can vote all they want for Undisputed Era for Tag Team of the Year. It's a sham. I'm not here to be popular. I'm here to dominate, and that is exactly what I done. NXT General Manager William Regal is out trying to find the next challenger for the Cruiserweight Title. No one can touch me.He can look all across the Earth, and the fact is he can't and he won't find anyone, nadie, who belongs in this ring with me. With us, the leaders of lucha libre, Legado Del Fantasma. And in 2021, this is gonna continue, cause I know exactly what we're gonna do. And gentlemen, our first order of business--" LUCHA! LUCHA! LUCHA! LUCHA! It's Gran Metalik and Lince Dorado! Dorado: "Metalik, it's kinda nice coming to a place where we're not chasing champions. But we got a question for you Santos Escobar. Do you really think you own lucha libre? You buggin, bro! Nobody does, because lucha libre is for everybody, todo el mundo." Raul Mendoza shouts at them calling them payasos (clowns) and they start to brawl. Escobar sneaks up behind them but he's caught, and the referee calls for a tag match courtesy of William Regal. Legado get the jump on them, but Dorado hits the Golden Rewind onto both men, and Metalik hits them with a oduble dropkick, then they follow up with simultaneous suicide dives!

* Legado Del Fantasma vs. Lucha House Party

The match is underway when we come back from break as Metalik hits a springboard hurricanrana on Mendoza, and a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker to Joaquin Wilde. Dorado gets the tag, springboard hurricanrana, Mendoza tags in, Dorado hits a springboard moonsault. Lucha libre is proudly represented in this match. The finish sees Metilik hit a springboard top rope hurricanrna, Dorado with a big splash but the count is broken up by Wilde. Metalik hops over the ropes to hit Wilde with a hurricanrana to the floor, Dorado hits an inverted 'rana, Metalik tags in to hit a diving elbow drop from the top rope and gets the 1-2-3. WINNERS: DORADO & METALIK.

Metalik motions to the champion that he wants the title. Time to learn who should be the Future Star of the Year: Austin Theory, Jake Atlas, Leon Ruff, Kacy Catanzaro, Kayden Carter, Indi Hartwell, Xia Li, A-Kid, Aoife Valkyrie, and Pretty Deadly. The Future Star of the Year: AUSTIN THEORY! Regal passes off the award to Austin Theory, and Johnny Gargano and Candice LeRae tell him to share the award with Indi. Austin says he has truly found +The Way+, tells Gargano that he will defend his title, and will break the CURSE. Johnny flips out that he said the C-word, then throws Theory's bottle of vitamin supplement and a mirror shatters off-screen. Another bad sign of things to come? Might be, because Johnny just walked under a ladder on his way to the ring!

After the final break, Regal presents the final award for Overall Competitor of the Year, to Io Shirai!

* NXT North American Championship: Leon Ruff vs. Johnny Gargano {C}

Our final match of 2020 is a title match! They lock up in the ring, Gargano with a headlock takeover, Ruff escapes, backflips, cover, 1, schoolboy, 1, rollup, 1-2-count. Theory jumps on the apron for a distraction, Ruff avoids the slingshot spear, crucifix pin for 1-2-kickout, hurricanrana, armdrag, and a schoolboy roll-through with a kick to the head. Ruff kicks him in the head, Gargano pushes him out to the floor, chops to the chest, throws him into the barricade, breaks the ref's count, Ruff jumps around to avoid him, hits a hurricanrana, throws him back in, keeps an eye on Theory, and Gargano catches him with a kick, hits a neckbreaker in the ropes. Gargano lands a suicide dive and we take our final commercial break.

Picture-in-picture makes its final appearence as we get to see Gargano hi-five Theory and kicks Ruff in the ribs. He hangs him over the apron, beats him down, chinlock in the ropes, hits a neckbreaker, and covers for a 2-count. Ruff battles back, Gargano brings him down for a kick to the head, gets a 2-count, and puts him in a rear chinlock.

When we come back, Ruff fights out of the hold, Gargano gives him a backbreaker, hammerlock on the arm and bends backwards. Ruff counters a neckbreaker, hits a jumping kick, gives him a kick to the gut, European uppercut, hits a couple forearm smashes, side-steps Gargano, kick to the back of the head, hits a backbreaker and a jumping neckbreaker. Ruff delivers a German suplex, hits a corkscrew cannonball in a corner, covers for a near-fall, Gargano fights back, Ruff comes back with a rebound lariat. Gargano hits a superkick, lawn dart into the middle turnbuckle, fakes the low superkick, hits it anyway, and covers for 2. Ruff kicks him in the head, Gargano blocks the crucifix bomb, counters into a backbreaker, and hits a Luke Harper/Brodie Lee style discus clothesline. Gargano plants him with a powerbomb, gets a 2-count, then switches to the Gargano Escape! Ruff gets his feet on the bottom rope, Gargano releases at the count of 4 and gets frustrated, shoves him out the ring, picks him up, Ruff counters, kicks him from the apron and hits a DIVING CUTTER ON THE FLOOR! Ruff brings him back in, goes up top, hits the frog splash, and gets a near-fall. Ruff puts him on the top rope, Gargano trips him up, hits One Final Beat, and covers for 3! WINNER and STILL NXT North American Champion: JOHNNY GARGANO!

The Gargano Curse is over!! Johnny Gargano has FINALLY been successful in defending a championship.

Dexter Lumis stands in the spotlight, as he will be the host for next week's NXT New Year's Evil. Featured matches next week include the NXT Cruiserweight Title on the line as Santos Escobar defends against Gran Metalik; Thatcher vs. Ciampa in a Fight Pit; Damien Priest vs. Karrion Kross; Rhea Ripley vs. Raquel Gonzalez in a Last Woman Standing Match; Finn Bálor vs. Kyle O'Reilly for the NXT Championship! HAPPY NEW YEAR 2021!!
